Sealing internal closed compartments
« on: May 12, 2016, 08:53:13 am »

All new to this so please forgive silly questions.

I am building a midwest fantail and intend to use z-poxt and fiberglass on the outside, thought sealing the inside with a couple of coats of z-poxy would also be a good idea however the front compartment is closed, how do I do I seal the wood?

First thought was to seal the wood then epoxy it but as I understand the epoxy hardens the wood and it looks hard enough to bend as it is.

second thought is after softening with ammonia coat the inside with only slightly diluted z-poxy and glue immediatly (using 2 pack epoxy)....does that sound like a reasonable plan?

Kevin
As long as the outside of the compartment is totally sealed then there's no risk of the inside getting wet. You could apply thinned resin to the frames and keel etc which are exposed within, before you apply the outer planking/skinning, but it really shouldn't be necessary. I never bother, and I haven't had a model go rotten or fall apart yet.

How about drilling a couple of good sized holes in a bulkhead of the sealed compartment, and pouring in some epoxy.  Then roll the boat around until you feel the epoxy  has covered all surfaces, drain the excess, and plug the holes.  Cover the plugs with something decorative, like life rings.

All this is theory-I have not tried it, but I am building a model where I will face the same problem.

Please let us know what you do and how it turns out.

Many thanks for your suggestions, I tried the wax oil the esteemed member recommended but all did not go well.

The wax oil covered the boat and I am unable to glue the rest of it together so have had to scrap the project.

Unfortunately it also leaked all over the new carpet and the dog and the wife threw me out and got an injunction to stop me going near the house.

I am now living in a cardboard box and next week will be in court answering cruelty charges raised by the RSPA due to the dogs injuries when it slipped down the stairs.

Perhaps I will stick to the epoxy next time  {-)

If your wife is called Olive and the dog is an Oild English sheepdog,
Replace the carpet with oilcloth and all will run smoothly in the end
