ARK ROYAL WW11
« on: June 15, 2016, 07:16:40 pm »

Hi all newbie here with 1001 things to ask. first let me tell you all a little about my self.
My general location is HULL and I love building model ships (not very good) but with each one I build I do get better  %%
I am currently building the MERIT 1/350 scale Ark Royal and one thing I just don't get is....there are 8 crane or tower like
things, 4 down each side of the flight deck. What are they??? They seem to have cables that fasten to the deck and they can be
lowered to the horizontal but what do they do. Also where can I get some modern Royal Navy paint, I used to get it from WEM
but I don't think they trade any more so I'm not sure where to buy it. Any help on both topics would be VERY helpful.

Probably the HF wire aerial masts.
Lowered to horizontal during flying stations.

Sometimes called hockey sticks.

Welcome to the Mayhem.

Someone took over the White Ensign paint range but I can't for the life of me remember who!  I think there's a range called Modelcolour that are pretty close.  Beside with Ark Royal you only need 1 shade of grey and the deck colour.

Sovereign hobbies took over the WEM colour coats range.

I'm sure Ned is correct about the aerials, but somewhere I've seen a photo of an RN carrier with outriggers so that non-folding wing aircraft could be be parked clear of the flight deck.

I've seen no evidence that Ark Royal was fitted like this but Ned's spot on about the "hockey sticks"  they were a prominent feature of the Ark Royal
Compare the two features on what I think is either Indomitable or Formidable for the first picture and an American built carrier for the second.

Interesting pictures with both the Sea Hurricane and the Corsair on outriggers, obviously different from the aerial supports.
