Servo advice required
« on: June 25, 2016, 11:18:55 am »

Hi all,

I need some recommendations for 2 servos
They will be independent and each will be turning a 110mm steerable kort.
I assume i will require something with a bit of torque...

Any help would be great

Regards

Hi Batfish,
I tend to use 1/4 scale servo's for that size of nozzle.
I use Hitec HS8055bb servo's.

One too many 5's Colin - I think you mean this one http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__9810__Hitec_HS_805BB_Mega_1_4_Scale_servo_19_8kg_0_19sec_152g.html
with the usual caveat about buying from non-UK sources (e.g. VAT due on import, Post Office handling charge etc).

Why do you feel the need for such strong servos for this application? The force on the servos is fairly modest as a kort is essentially balanced, normal standard servos offer about 3kg.cm torque which should move that size of Kort easily.

Also listed,

Andy, i did not specify a torque figure i just asked for advice.
The props are 5 blade 100mm
The Korts are alloy

My initial comment was related more to the post about using 1/4 scale servos with an almost 20kg.cm torque figure. I just think that is overkill.

You could get a pair of these for about seven quid if you want a torquey servo. Very good value.

Andy,

That's cheap servo's 15kg as well perhaps worth a punt just to try them out.
I'll have a good look into them and go from there.

I think 15kg.cm is optimistic, two thirds that at best. However they are very strong, and unlike the earlier MG995, they centre well. I use them for steering servos in cars- no complaints at all.

Hi All,
I like to over engineer my models that way I don't have motor, servo or esc problems, especially when using large props like I like to do.
Dave, yes stand corrected one to many 5's.

Hi all,

Been looking at the plans for the tug
I don't think I'll be able to use my large motors
As the shafts will sit very low in hull. I may manage to fit a belt drive but not entirely sure.

Now considering brushless application.
Maybe 5065 320kv?

Belt drive sounds good to me. SHG marine are good for that.

Everything depends on clearance.
But fingers crossed belt Drive, might even go brushless anyway.

If you've got room for a 50mm diameter brushless motor, you have room for a pulley.

Going to swing in past Mobile marine either tomorrow or Friday,
Have to see Brian about propshafts etc.
Might see about 1.1 reduction pulleys whilst there.
