I had a photo of an Arun with green antifouling, alas I have lost it. Could be that they get a cheaper deal elsewhere or the toxicity has changed, nemesis

Apparently the black was first introduced about 3 years ago and that first boat is still clean as a pin !! I will double check that and let all know  :-)) :-)) But still prefer red   {-) {-)

The Newhaven boat came back from a refit where all the aluminium fittings have been shot blasted and specially treated. They are left in the dull grey/aluminium colour, most of the removable  fittings located by stainless steel bolts have been treated this way to prevent corrosion. Interestingly, the hull anti fouling is still red.

Firstly a big thank you to Speedline for the kind offer.

Secondly I am having trouble locating deck paint. Speedline recommend Upol textured paint in no4 mid grey. I have looked on line and I can only find black or they don't mention a colour at all. I couldnt even find it on the Upol website. I see Halfords do a textured spray can but I don't know how course it is.
I looked in the local B&Q and they do a Valspar can but it's course and has a white fleck in it.

Can anyone tell me where I can find the upol in grey in stock or are there any suitable Alternatives?

Hi Les

I've seen a few boats now sprayed with the Halfords textured paint and it looks very good. I think the boats I saw had the paint straight out the can too, it's about the right colour I was told by the builders.
Might be worth buying a tin and having a go.

Les/Craig
Overspray the texture paint in the colour of your choice, my Dover boat has a much lighter grey that the others on the deck, it is an experimental colour (which is lifting in places.) As they apply it with a heavy brush/broom, it does not have to be that even.
I used the PlastiKote grey texture from the "Range", then overcoated with Humbrol, all went superbly. I will use a slightly lighter texture on the cabin top areas that have a neater texture, Halfords texture paint. I will then spray the orange over it all.

I have used the valspar one and did a thinned down coat of humbrol acrylic 79 grey which is the same colour as BS381C that the RNLI use.

I would stop looking for the Upol paint now as I have recently discovered the Halfords texture paint and its much better. Its around £8 a can and its only small so expect to use two. You need to spray from at least 300mm away so there's a lot of waste. Its finish is a little gritty so a gentle rub over with some fine wire wool to just take that off results in a near perfect result.

Thanks to all for the advice. I have bought some of the Halfords paint.
I am now wondering about the order to do things. Mainly fitting the kick boards. I am thinking spray the deck then glue on the kick boards using P38 filler which is I think what Speedline recommend if I understand Correctly?  I guess it would be best to scrape off the paint under the kick boards rather than stick onto the Paint? What about the other deck Furniture? Scrape off the paint or glue onto it?
It seems a good idea to paint the kick boards before gluing them on.
These questions seem really basic but I know doing the wrong thing  first  makes life harder down the line.

To partly answer my own questions.
I have just been looking at the photos on Kim's dvd and the kick boards are painted with textured paint on the lower horizontal surface with the upright piece painted white. Which indicates stick on the kick boards before painting the deck then mask the upright and spray.

Agreed Les.
Stick them on then sand them to the correct profile, wet and dry, apply metal primer, paint then texture when doing the deck.

The upright part of the kick board is smooth grey paint on Dover's Severn, same as the rear handrails. The horizontal part fitted to the deck is textured and painted deck colour.
Makes for some interesting masking up....

Les,
Just want to affirm 17-09's point about the upright part of the inverted 'T' kickboard, in case it got overlooked - it should be grey not white [sometimes the angle of sun in a photograph can make colours look a lot lighter [even white], likewise some wet [due to the rain or a washdown] deck paint greys virtually black, when they are in fact mid to dark grey.
If you want to look at the profile and add that to your kickboards too, then this was covered by me recently on my Speedline Models Trent Class build thread below, somewhere.

Can anyone tell me if there is a rattle can colour that is about right for the kick boards and railings on a Severn? I've trawled through posts but can't find much on it.

Off the top of my head try Ford polor gray not near my shed to check at the moment  %). Maybe a shade dark I'll look aboard our boat and compare asap.

Hi Les,
I used Humbrol satin 166, it offered up well to the Dover boat, deck is matt 64 but Dover has an experimental deck shade of grey.

Hi Les
Just took the top off a can of Ford polor gray I had in the shed and took it down to the boat as promised and it's a few shades to dark.So popped to Halfords to have a look and didn't really see anything like it but shelves wasn't really full !Might have to try 17-09's colours  :-)) but I do believe you can have rattle can paint mix to your request

Thanks for the help.
I don't see humbrol paint around much. I know a lot of modellers use it and of course I can find it on line.
Generally are we talking spray cans, brush painting or Airbrushing for things like the kick boards and railings?

Hi Les
Found on my travels today a Tamiya spray can paint that is near as possible to the colour you need I would say for your kicker boards.

Tamiya AS-16  Light Gray

Hope this is a bit of help to you

Thanks for the help chaps. Much appreciated.
To widen my options for painting future bits I invested in an airbrush off ebay and I have been watching airbrushing videos on YouTube
