Newbie Help!!!
« on: July 27, 2016, 09:00:06 am »

Well, after a few false starts, and life getting in the way, I am now beginning to plan my start in the world of RC model boats.

I do require some advice though.

I currently own a Belt and Disc Sander from Machine Mart

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-cs4-6d-belt-and-disc-sander/

and I intend on purchasing either a scroll saw or a band saw but am really struggling to decide which.

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/060112400/

or

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/einhell-180w-band-saw/

For example...

Building frames for a boat out of ply and balsa….how do you guys do it?
Would you rough the shape out close to the lines then use the sander to get them accurate, would you use scroll saw or band saw?
How do you get a straight cut with a scroll saw?

I don't mind buying the equipment but want to make sure I buy the right one.
Do I need scroll saw AND a band saw???

HELP!!!!!

Hi Dave
Welcome to the forum.
Get the scroll saw first.
Some scroll saw's have a narrow and wide blades(narrow for the curves and the wide for straight cuts).
I use a scroll saw mainly and cutting close to the line, as for straight lines it takes a bit a practice with a scroll saw.
A small hand plane or a big flat course wood file works OK.
As for inside frames I drill a large hole and use a jigsaw with a fine tooth metal blade.

Cheers Guys

So for both saws am I right in thinking to cut close to the line then use the sander to go down to the final size??

Hi Dave,

I have the Clarke CSS400C  and am very happy with it and as some body said,  you can do inside cuts and this is explained in the Manual.

I have been using scroll saw and band saw for 40+ years and still cannot cut straight even though joinery is my profession
