Oil separator/condenser
« on: July 27, 2016, 02:46:14 pm »

I am now in the process of starting to construct an oil separator/condenser.  The size is approx. 30 mm dia x 70 mm.
Can anyone recommend the max/min dimension from the bottom of the 'discharge' pipe to the top of the base so as to allow easy discharge of the 'sludge'.
Should the bottom of the discharge pipe be square or would it be preferable to be cut at an angle?

Bonjour Roger,
The size of an oil separator depends on the machine you will use. My Stuart D10 need more volume than my 2 cc machines and to my opinion, 30 x 70 is too small. 50 x 80 are my minima for my smaller machines.
The pipes should be on the top, in order not to slow down the steam and create a conter pressure for the machine if the water would feel them and not face to face to oblige steam to go in the separator before its exhaust. If you had to put the pipes face to face, a little separating plate should be soldered between them in the separator before closing it.

Thank you all for your input and I shall incorporate your advice.  I intended following the layout shown by Keith Appleton/Main Steam Models in the design.
