Steam plant help needed, please...
« on: August 20, 2016, 10:15:28 am »

I've decided to rejoin the dark side (after twenty years at least) for what will be my last ever build...to that effect, I've ordered a Krick Anna kit from CMB. Nice little boat, looks easy to put together with the minimum of tools and just the dining table to work on.

So...a spot of advice guys, if you will. Has anyone built Anna? Anything to trap the unwary that I ought to know about?

And of course...any recommendations for a steam plant for it?

Rich looking at the box pic, something similiar to this is all you need.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Midwest-Model-VI-Steam-Engine-Kit-980-Marine-Single-Cylinder-Vertical-Boiler-MIB-/201630891077?hash=item2ef2233c45:g:dG8AAOSwIgNXlWgh
twin cylinder virgo I suspect would be over kill, power and cost wise.

I would suggest single cylinder double acting oscillator, just remember no reverse, but a kitchen rudder would sort that.

Stuart turner do a set of castings, you'd need to find someone to machine them, £42.00

Im currently machining a couple of Stuart ST oscillators for use in a Midwest fantail which I think is about the same size as yours.

The ST is more powerful than the Midwest engine as it is double acting and the Midwest engine kits are just to expensive now they are getting rare.

For the boiler I intend to make my own based on the Modeen upright design

I no longer have the tools, space or dexterity to even think about doing anything like that, Kevin...so I'll be scouring the likes of eBay, etc, for something suitable. I did notice the cost of steam plants...frightened the life out of me, to be honest. And I thought submarines were expensive...

(My Anna is 610mm oal, by the way)

about 150mm longer than the fantail then but the midwest engine is just single action so an ST should have about 50-60% more power ie more than enough. My main worry is having enough room/weight allowance for a half decent boiler but thats a while off for me yet. The hull should be ready for its first dip in a couple of months so will see what weight and space is available then. Everything is new to me apart from the engine and boiler so slow progress :)

btw is oal measured straight line stern to prow or is it the hull line, I have something in the back of my mind about being told about the racing speed of a hull being limited by the distance "round" the water line, guess thats displacement hulls which these are?

I was always led to believe that OAL is from the extreme end of the bow to the extreme end of the stern, not including overhanging flagstaffs, masts, rudders, etc.

thats what I assumed, all very new to me. Prior to this my only involvement with the sea has been as part owner and operator of a dive boat business :)

Hi, A Maxwell Hemmings steam plant sells for over a Grand and this one is MINT, The Frank Hinchcliffes "Cruiser" kit is currently over £500. I do think that £800 is a Bargain. nemesis

I don't doubt that for one second, old chap..worth £800 of anyone's money.

But out of my price range at the moment, and quite possibly overkill for my needs.

May be heresy, but if you can't make a working steam plant,  why not power it with an electric motor and hide it inside a "mock" boiler and steam plant. Would simplify thinks and be a good deal cheaper

I did consider that, in fact I did it with my African Queen (the Billings kit) years ago.

It would save a lot of swearing, and a lot of expenditure, you're right...the more I delve into this, the more nervous my bank manager becomes. Another thing I've considered is to power it conventionally with an electric motor, and then hide everything in a wooden engine cover, with the engine controls fitted. With a bit of care, and with micro electronics, I reckon I could make a half decent open boat out of this.

Have a look at this on The Model Dockyard web site. It might be of some use ideawise/thought provocation etc

  Ritalea
 Ref: MAR2919
Ritalea: Freelance ‘Windermere’ style open launch, simple machine hull design, built in plywood. Model is 920mm in length and 235mm beam. Original used electric motor but could easily be converted to small steam unit. Two sheet plans, fully detailed
