thought I could get this locally but no joy

Planed squared edge pine

71w by 12mm approx 800 length

Have you tried B&Q they have various small sizes of softwood timber its reds but can't be certain its Pine (very rare nowadays). I can get the small timbers from our local woodyard they stock all sotrs of small sizes of PSE and its straight roughly half the price of B&Q. Hope this helps.

Beware that most of B&Q's stripwood is composed of short lengths
scarfed together causing weak points and worse if you try bending
especially with steam or heat.

Most timber merchants either stock it, or can order it in for you.
