Small plane
« on: September 14, 2016, 10:11:20 am »

G'day guys

I need to thin down some timber on the boat I'm restoring. I'm happy with all the metal working tools but not upto scratch with timber. Can you recommend me a small plane to do the job, or should I just sand with 120 grit?
TIA

I have a tiny finger plane (about 1/2" square and 2" long), it works beautifully for small timbers, for anything a bit bigger I have a couple of small old wooden planes (picked up at boot fairs)

Depending on how much you need to remove a small "mouse" palm sander does a good job and is a usefull tool to invest in.

As this is a boat forum........
Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly; but when they lit a fire in the craft, it sank, proving once and for all that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

yes it is.

the frog and throat would be facing the other way on a right hand plane.

Now this is interesting...clearly the plane as shown is used in an a clockwise manner to shave/remove material but is termed as left handed

A propeller traveling in the same clockwise rotation is termed as right handed  %)

It's left handed Derek because you push it to the left :}

Well lets get down to handedness   %)...Paul McCartney probably could push it clockwise to the right, where as John Lennon would have had difficulty   {-) ....

Have you ever tried to pull a plane? >>:-(..............Derek

I have, a Japanese hand plane. Wonderful bit of kit.

So has the World's Strongest Man, but that wasn't a small plane.

"Have you ever tried to pull a plane? ..............Derek"

No but I tried to pull a bird once...... :D ....boom,boom.

I bought a plane from a woodworking exhibition a long time ago, looked a nice bit of kit, only just starting to find a real use for it...

A Kid Plane..French, but looks like the David plane but more versatile..
