You will get better results with a hand scraper.
Particularly around curves.

The handing of the plane is determined by the direction of use.
In this instance from left to right, (clockwise) so it is therefore termed as left handed. Nothing to do wether you are left or right handed.
Tradesmen pull planes and other tools left or right handed all the time. At least here in OZ.

Amazed at the price of the David plane, mine was £3 many years ago, still going strong
