SLARS
« on: September 20, 2016, 03:16:26 pm »

My son, known in the family as the Sorcerers Apprentice, and myself have been investigating the possiblility of producing working models of the Shannon Launch And Recovery System to carry the 1/12th scale Shannons we will be building in the near future.

He has built a quick 'proof of concept' model at about 1/14th scale or so using salvaged r/c tank parts from the spares box and anything else he could find in the workshop.

These are the results so far.

Clip of the tractor unit under radio control.

Carriage unit rotating whilst carrying about 4kg of ballast.

As we now know the problems to be overcome, e.g. replace the nylon/plastic gears with metal etc, the drawings have been rescaled and a start made on building two units at 1/12th scale.

Gribeauval, that is impressive - please pass on my compliments to your son. What will the actual version turn out like?. One waits 'with baited breath'! Like a lot of us, I have got quite used to seeing these impressive machines and seeing them in action quite a lot when visiting the Shannon for photos. Also with my illustrated talks on the launch and recovery of the Shannon in the South East and Midlands, have come to see 'up close and personal' the workings of them. Therefore, quite impressed with those two models!

Well done Gribeauval, if this is impressive model is just the 'proof of concept/ put together from odds and ends' standard of model building that you and your son produce, then your final version is going to look truly astounding. Really super to look at!

That looks pretty good even as a concept.  The finished ones are going to be fantastic!

Thanks for the comments chaps.  :-))

A start has been made on the 1/12th version.

First thing needed was a rigid chassis.

This was followed by the main barrel that holds the engine and hydraulic compressor.

The two have been temporarily fixed together and the main pivots for the outer drive units added.

The recessed door was fabricated from 2mm styrene. The dished section was heat formed and glued into the outer ring and when hardened off given a coat of primer.

The drivers compartment has been fabricated using the same tubing from the body and styrene sheet.

The windows and door have been cut out and then given coats of primer and orange topcoat.

The drivers seat has been made and a much modified figure added to do the driving. This will sit on its pivot in the cabin later when the interior is finished.

Now have the main chassis for the trailer section of the SLARS made painted and the main pivots in place.

The track unit outriggers have been made and representations of the urethane road wheels produced.

These have been painted and assembled into two units and fitted onto the main pivots.

Idlers at each end fitted along with tracks taken from a 1/16th scale Tiger tank found at a car boot sale yesterday.

The main hollow support beam has been fabricated and the turntable bearing fitted.

The rotating carriage section has also been made and is ready to paint.

Fitted onto the rotating bearing.

The chassis for the tractor unit has also been made and fitted with the gearboxes from the Tiger tank along with new tracks. After testing I have now decided to change the gearboxes to a higher, 5:1, ratio set as the present 3:1 set give ample speed but not enough power to push the trailer when loaded with ballast without excessive track slippage. The tracks may also be replaced with the metal version when funds allow.

This isn't the one you saw at Blackpool Mick, that was the smaller "proof of concept " version made by David.

This is MY 1/12th version under construction. {-)

Update of the build I have been working on and off between other things.

The new 5:1 gearboxes have been fitted to both the tractor and the trailer, the main items given a coat of blue paint. Here the rig is now together in one piece for the first time.

Control systems on a double decker fitting that slides into the main barrel. The controls for the lighting systems will be in the side pods, yet to be built, along with their control systems.

The drive batteries all fit neatly in the lower decking

View of the whole rig!

Carriage rotated and extended in the recovery position.

The rig can also tilt up as the main ram is powered by a screwed rod system built into the ram interior, (video at a later date!)

fantastic build, love it.  but please accept this as a warning from someone who toys around with 1/16 tanks... go for metal gearboxes.. no, not the zinc alloy versions, as even these wont take any serious turning work. ive found the full metal [steel gears] are the best option, especially if ever venturing towards metal tracks.. ive got metal tracks for my tanks but not yet fitted, as still having fun on the plastic ones, as quite hard wearing and the paint seems to last longer on them too.

They are full steel taigen 5:1 gearboxes and I have decided that I will not need the metal tracks as the trailer unit is also now powered so the slippage problem has virtually gone away. As a test I loaded the main beam with 24 Kg of ballast and there was no reduction in speed or excessive load on the systems at all.

And you can b****r off!!   {-) {-) {-)

This thing is bad enough to build as a one off, never mind having to make umpteen identical parts for other people.

I know I'm a little dense at times, and some would say as thick as two short planks, but I can read, and if you start at the beginning of the thread, Pipster, you will see that it ALL  has been built from scratch as far as I can see.

What is the point in a person taking the time to write and photograph a build thread if people are not going to read it from the beginning before asking questions!.
