I know I'm a little dense at times, and some would say as thick as two short planks, but I can read, and if you start at the beginning of the thread, Pipster, you will see that it ALL  has been built from scratch as far as I can see.

What is the point in a person taking the time to write and photograph a build thread if people are not going to read it from the beginning before asking questions!.

Jim.

He asked a resonable question about the ram as I did not show how it was made because I forgot to take pictures, which if I had done I would have posted them. It hasn't all been built from scratch e.g. the gearboxes and tracks.

Looking fantastic!
Did you make the main ram yourself?  If not what is it and where did you get it from?
Phil

The ram is made from styrene tubes, an M3 nut and threaded rod and a very small high torque motor gearbox combination.

When power is applied to the motor the rod rotates and the nut runs up it taking the inner ram with it, Reverse the power supply and the nut comes back down the rod contracting the ram into the outer casing.

Hope this sketch makes it clear.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice, my son David, has also been building a SLARS unit at 1/12th and his is a little further on than mine. This is a video clip of a test run he made this morning. The last portion of the clip shows the main ram in action lifting the carriage with his part built Shannon on board. It's slow as there has to be a trade off between speed and power, More speed = Less lifting power; Less speed = More lifting power.

David [and Mike],
Now that's VERY clever and a real engineering accomplishment! The Shannon looks good too.
You were both featured with your SLARS in my 'last' article for MMI - The LBES Knightcote Rally, but alas it did not get published.
Again, hats off to you both.
