I read recently in Arther Nelson's book 'The Tudor navy' that in the sixteenth century ships: 'Boys were whipped every Monday morning incase they had been guilty of waggishness and idleness' (Page 116). Poor tykes:O(

It would appear that Marines were given heavier punishments, up to the maximum 48, as presumably they were expected to set a better example to the rest of the crew. It is hard to imagine how they survived! <:(

They often did not survive the 48.
Patrick O'Brian, as well as writing adventure stories, was a naval historian. The subject of floggings was covered in the Aubrey-Maturin series (Master and Commander) of books. Although the series is fiction, the events are based on historical events and records.

If I were to suggest that this practice ''The Floggings " be re-introduced ....I would be howled down by Civil Liberations....

What say you?.........

A person attempting burglary, rape or plunder is let off free by the Courts .........the victim in defence of his home or family is found guilty of attack against the intruder ....and is found guilty of an offence >:-o

Let us ponder ............. Derek

That will teach him to stay awake on watch! O0

The punishment listed in the Admiralty Black Book for sleeping on watch, a very serious offence because it endangered the ship, was at first humiliating and for repeated offences brutal. A bucket of sea-water was poured over the head of a first offender. A second time the offender's hands were tied over his head and a bucket of water was poured down each sleeve. For a third offence the man was tied to the mast with heavy gun chambers secured to his arms, and the captain could order as much additional pain to be inflicted as he wished. The fourth offence was inevitably fatal; the offender was slung in a covered basket hung below the bowsprit. Within this prison he had a loaf of bread, a mug of ale and a sharp knife. An armed sentry ensured that he did not return aboard if he managed to escape from the basket. Two alternatives remained -- starve to death or cut himself adrift to drown in the sea.

being a saddo, I just reckon that 30,161 lashes were given out to 953 men and boys.

an average of approximately 32 lashes per person........
