"Under" Hull for an RC Goose
« on: October 06, 2016, 11:28:54 pm »

Hi,

Looking for a small, cheap kit or RTR hull to provide the propulsion for a 17 inch goose decoy body for my dog to chase.

My dog loves swimming after a single snow goose that lives with a gaggle of Canada geese at the local pond and I'm looking to build an inexpensive substitute when it's out feeding.

I don't feel like paying for the $150 dollar professional duck hunter systems.

Any ideas?

Any good?  I don't know what range it achieves though

Allnightin,

Thanks for the clue.  I tracked down some U tube videos and this thing has potential.  Can't find anything about range or battery length though.

I'll need to get the decoy and see what sort of mounting I can create.

Decoy arrived. It has a hard rubber bottom with a tube for ballasting with sand so I've ordered the motor unit.  I've had foot surgery so it'll probably be spring before I get to it.

Thanks,

There are many motor units like the one in the link. I would be careful with the Playmobile unit, as it has the RC built in. I am guessing that this is a toy grade RC and would recommend you do a range test, before cutting into the decoy to fit it.

TigerTiger,

Agree, I too have my suspicions on range.  I don't need it to do the 1/3 mile length of the pond, just enough off shore from the perimeter path to give me sea room to maneuver it away from Gigi's pursuit.

I have the Playmobil power unit - hooked under a Mallard duck decoy - it works fine but I haven't been more than 50 metres from shore because of the limited size of the lake.

Plastic,

50 metres should be more than enough.

Can you send me pictures of your setup for ideas?

Thanks,

Yes - but it'll be a couple of days until I'm back in front of a computer.

Plastic,

No worries.  I'm couch bound with an heavily wrapped foot stuck up in the air.

Here's my Robo-duck.

The Playmobil unit is ty-wrapped to the under-keel of the duck so it's easy to remove and fit to other models.

Going through the blurb in the box it says the range is supposed to be over 100'.

Plastic,

Tie wraps -- one a simple solution.  The "keel" to my decoy already has some holes in it above the sand "bulb."  I might be able to get this thing in the water this autumn after all.

Thanks,

Many years ago I decided, with the help of a brand new blade in my favourite knife handle, to remove that keel in order to fit a Robbe turnable kort type unit.
My jeans, my leg and the ambulance crew will attest to the 'self lubricating' type of plastic that the decoy was made of. The blade seemed to pick up speed of its own accord once the cut had begun.
Beware.

Identical setup to my mallard and I have no problems with range as is described. Battery hungry though, but I expect your 'chasing' training times will not be too lengthy. Important to remove batteries after each use!

Great minds think alike......  :-))

Yeah - battery life - some people say it can be about an hour per set of batteries.

Well,

My foot healed enough to get back to this project and  >>:-( <*< <:( >>:-( <:(

In the measure once, cut twice category....make sure you understand the system before modifying.

I missed the "must mount the transmitter physically on top of the motor to accomplish synching" point in the minimalist instructions .  I also didn't make sure everything worked before modifying... it seemed so straight forward....

So, after notching a 1/4 alum. plate to fit over/around the mount-to-hull fittings on top of the motor, cutting wooden spacer blocks and notching them to accept the tie wraps, and epoxying everything in place ... It won't synch (the motor battery status light doesn't come on at turn-on but I'm assuming that's a post-synching thing).

 <*< <*< <*<

Where's my hacksaw...

Well,

The modeling gods had pity on me -- maybe because it's American Thanksgiving.

Between the hacksaw and my Dremel tool, I was able to cut through the plate without damage.  The heat from the cutting softened the epoxy and everything came off cleanly.

Synch was accomplished successfully and I decided to proceed directly to pond trials -- I'll jigger something up later for the rear tie down so I can pop the battery off without cutting tie wraps.

Speed seemed good.  Turning great.  No opportunity to test range.

Gigi was fascinated by it but chose not to jump into the sub-40 degree Fahrenheit waters (we had some ice a couple of mornings ago).  I may need to paint the second decoy white and use it as a terrestrial fetch toy.

The hook on the front does an excellent job snagging water lily pads -- it's going away.

Bottomline:  A successful hack.  To all, thanks for the pointers. :-))

I have just noticed that the Playmobil unit is 2.4 GHz. I would do a range test, but expect the range to be over 600 meters. Basically further than you can see to control it.

Thanks,

Right now the real snow goose has not returned to the pond and Gigi isn't interested in chasing the fake goose.

Got a good sea trial in a different pond without string algae.  Good range and good power against the wind.  Unfortunately,  Gigi wasn't a bit interested in chasing it.   <*<

However, she has decided that, since her snow goose foe isn't around this year, any Canada goose in the pond was fair game.  The attached picture shows her at work.  She'll spend up to an hour swimming after them.  Fortunately, even the smallest gosling has sufficient speed to avoid her. :-)

A thought, out of the box.

Is there a toy that she will chase and fetch if you throw it?
If so, try placing that on the back of the decoy duck.

TigerTiger,

Sorry for the delay -- Gigi has gone to the great goose chasing pond in the sky.  We miss her.
