Custom mixed aerosol paint.
« on: October 22, 2016, 10:42:02 am »

Can anyone recommend a good mail order supplier (UK) for a colour mixed aerosol spray paint for the deck and cabin sides of a Vosper RAF crash tender.
I believe the correct colour should be BS 381C Light Grey 631 preferably in a satin/semi gloss finish.
Thanks. Robbob.

I must admit to being pleasantly supplied with the Holts paint from Halfords. I can't confirm whether the shade was 100% but it looked right, sprayed well and wasn't too expensive.

Hi Tony.
Is it correct that they can only mix gloss though?
I'm using Halfords acrylic paints exclusively for this build so it would be appropriate.
Ideally I'd like to find a local supplier (NW London , not necessarily Halfords, that can do this.
Thanks.

Rob
This stuff is perfectly compatible with Halfords Acrylic aerosols. http://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-body-repair/specialist-decorative-paints/halfords-satin-lacquer-300ml#     I've used it over the red primer and it came up very well indeed.

Hi DM.
I already have that very same lacquer for the red oxide anti-fouling on the hull bottom and some Halfords gloss lacquer for the hull sides.
I have tried it over some red oxide on a test piece and it does indeed work very well.
Specifically I need the  BS381C 631 light grey in a custom mixed aerosol for the deck and cabin sides, ideally in a satin finish but gloss
may suffice if I overcoat in the Halfords satin lacquer.
Thanks.

I though mail order was not possible as its a dangerous product to send through the post - unless a carrier like ups etc brings it, would a car paint supplier be able to mix up the relevant shade - as I am unsure if cromadex could do the cans being its for personal use, or HMG paints or similar supplier.

Hi Warspite.
I have found a firm in Milton Keynes (CJ Aerosols) that can mix the colour (in satin) that I need but with vat and delivery two 400ml cans
work out at just over £20 each so I'm trying to find a alternative locally that I can collect from and not as expensive.
Thanks.

Don't lose sight of the cost of any alternatives.
At first sight £40 seems ridiculous, but how much have you spent on the model so far? Remember the old saying about spoiling the ship for a ha'pworth of tar?
Two 400ml cans seems like a lot of paint - could you perhaps make do with several coats of standard grey primer and just one can of 'special brew'?
I don't know how much Halfords charge for mixing up the exact colour but a 300ml can of their regular stuff is eight quid these days, so you can bet a can of special mix will be at least 50% more. Two of those plus a can of satin could cost over £30, so CJ Aerosol's price doesn't look that unreasonable any more..
You could pay a visit to the Warwick Show on the Friday and collect the paint from MK on the way... That way you could almost convince yourself that the delivery charge was zero!
At the end of the day there's a premium to pay for knowing that the colour is exactly right, but only you can decide whether or not the end product is worth it.
Suit yourself.

Hi Inertia.
Two cans is probably a bit too much as you rightly suggest.
The deck and cabin sides are already primed with Halfords grey and the deck will get a light coat of Halfords textured paint to give it it's 'non-slip' texture and only the final coats need to be the
BS631 colour and finished with a satin lacquer.
The Warwick show outing via MK could work too, I am almost convinced, thanks for the suggestion  :-))
Thanks.

Hi Rob,

A subject I covered at length! Colour, taken from Vosper actual plans, is BS631 Grey, although over time, I bet it changed slightly. Cabin roof were originally intended to be yellow, then went to grey, and ended up white. Finish was "cerrux" which was none slip on decks, so its a matt finish. Rear well deck was planked, as was the area where tow hook is located. For cosmetic appearance I cheated a bit and went gloss finish on the cabin roofs, might have been a bit slippy for the crew!
Here is the colour, I achieved the none slip finish using the paint in the picture, just kept doing dust coats till I arrived at the texture I wanted, then painted over in BS631 which I had made as an aerosol by a local paint mixer company. Cabin sides where indeed a darker grey, but once I did this it looked like I had made a mistake, just didn't look right, so did it all in BS631

I have a load of plans, pictures etc, and my build blog is on here somewhere, so just ask,
Paul

Hi Rob,

Just to clarify my comment about not being 100% sure of the colour. I was using Kreigsmarine RAL colour references for the 3 shades of grey on SMS Nassau. I can't tell whether the colour was 100% because I don't know whether the shade cards are absolute, nor whether my computer screen is correct. All I do know is that the paint stuck on the primer and that the finished product looked fine.
I don't work for Halfords nor do any of my mates ok2

Good luck

Tony

Hi red181
Yes, I have seen you posts on the subject.

Like you I will stick with BS631 I just need to find a good supplier at a reasonable price which is why I asked for recommendations in my original post.
PS..I hope my crash tender looks as good as yours when it's finished.

Hello. I have just had a can of spray paint made up for my latest model, it was an (Ivecco truck colour) this was done by the car parts supplier Motorworld, I don't know if you have one in your area but they carry a huge range of colour charts both car and truck, if you have the colour that you require in mind they should be able to mix it to your requirement, the price works out a lot less than the humbrol tins, best part is they can repeat the colour as and when, ask them if you can look at the charts in daylight as the lighting inside could give a false reading. Most of the car paints today are acrylic so be careful when working with a mixture of enamels and acrylic. Howard Q.

If you're concerned with cost, a small spray gun and compressor can soon pay for itself over using aerosol cans. Plus you can mix most solid colours you require with a blend of red, yellow and blue.

best man at my wedding owns a paint factory and shop they sell a lot to motor factor out lets. He can mix any colour you like and put them into 400ml aerosols at £5 each then I can post them on.
Acrylic single pack which is non- isocyanate  don't need breathing mask and can be used at home and if you want satin not a problem he can mix that to
base coat which is for metallic and pearls needs clear coat on top
primer in grey black white or beige again 400ml can £5 plus post
be can cross reference any colour or mix from a colour code or ral code
I'm not making a penny you only pay for paint and postage
If your using a spray gun and only need small amount I can get them cheap too £5 half a litre
just pm and I can give you my number hope it helps would take 2-3days to get to you when ordered :-))

Hi Boatsandbikes.
That's a very interesting offer however I have now ordered a couple of cans from a Manchester company (JTB Supplies) that can mix the colour I need and fill two 400ml rattle cans for under £18.00 including vat and delivery.
The only snag is that they can only mix gloss but I had already decided to overspray with a satin lacquer.
They also sell through eBay.
It is a good offer though, particularly if you man can mix any colour in different finishes, I'm sure other Mayhemers would be interested to take you up on your offer.
Thanks again.

not a problem bud all jtb supplies need to do is add matting agent to make gloss paint finish as a satin finish

No surprise that it's as easy as that but they don't offer a satin finish, perhaps their market is just automotive where gloss is the preferred type.

Err...I think you are looking at INERTIA's pictures, however I would completely agree that he has done a great paint job on his hull O0
