What is the suggested Voith Schneider location
« on: November 17, 2016, 12:26:22 pm »

I am building the RMAS Moorhen but powering it with a single Voith Schneider unit. I have noted that many use dual units which is not my choice. I had been considering mounting it about one third of the way back from the bow. Would that be an adequate location for it? I have experience with Z drives but not this. It is the brushless powered one from Bauer-Modelle

Hi the original moorhen had to aqua masters right aft in each quarter, the RN Mine hunters had them right aft and Red funnel ferries have two right aft and one right forward. But as you are putting only one I think your logic is about 1/3, so as to make steering and operating her better. The single unit tugs I have worked on were about 1/25 back from the stem.

... Red funnel ferries have two right aft and one right forward.
It may be the way you've written it, but they just have two units, one at each end. (They are symmetrical boats from end to end as they don't turn round, just go the other way. As such they don't have a forward and aft just number 1 & 2 ends.)

Unlike the Wightlink Saint class which have two thrusters aft and one forward but they are single ended ferries.

What ever , the thread was the units are on the ends, though they where peculiar to use compared to the TUT's in the port. But on manoeuvring you drove them like shopping trolleys.

Regards to ends they do have a forward and aft end, we referred to them as Southampton or Cowes going end, not sure now sometime I was working on them, but officially I think the Cowes end is the bow end.

I have mounted the VSP unit about 1/3 of the way from the bow. I tried it in the tub at low speed on a 2 cell LiPo and it does well. It will certainly take some practice to get good with it but that is part of the fun. :-))  Note the 'Fredernized' hull interior. The supplied print templates were very inaccurate.
