Polyester fillers do have adhesive qualities, otherwise they wouldn't stick to material being filled. As such the bond is probably strong enough for models in most circumstances. The thing to remember is that it has considerably lower strength than most purpose designed adhesives, especially when it comes to tensile and shear forces.

And it does not stick well to styrene or most other plastics.

I've always found polyester filler adheres fairly well to styrene myself, as a filler mind.

Hi
I think we are dancing around theories of chemistry or issue.

Polyester resin dissolved in styrene is obliviously going to work to a certain extent on GRP (Styrene) and is also going to bind fairly well to wood ... for a while but wood's makeup over time will change resins, sap, shrinkage etc combined with impact strength may lead to joint failing.  Having said that the joint will allways fail if the chemical or mechanical bond is broken ... so which is right really ...?

Silicon bath sealer works well on bath edges ... until the bath rim either sinks or the bond is broken mechanically ... or chemically in deteriation

Epoxy is also a good glue bit is not chemically matched to GRP ( Styrene) so we should assume only mechanically bonding from the outset?

If there was a perfect solution i'm sure we would have stopped discussing some time ago....
Just my thoughts,
Kim

Perhaps i should say i always bond wooden deck to grp (Styrene) hulls with polyester in Styrene filler ... knowing that at best I have made a mechanical bond with the wood and styrene and in my mind i'm happy knowing that any repair is easy as i can sand back to the joint and do the same in future.
Would i joind a deck in full size boat like this ... course not i'd go chemical and mechanical ... belts and braces .. but then i have several horse at the back not a 12v motor...lol

Regards,
Kim

How about Tizdaz takes your "mechanical" measure in the form of  some glass strands to make the combined U-pol recipe they (or is it just Allscotld) call Glass filled Bridger?

Here is a poser then....However, it was absolutely rock hard. ... rather than the easy sand or carve finish of normal filler, which it outwardly resembled..any thoughts?

I used a body filler back in the 1970s that was rock hard and difficult to sand.
I discovered that there are different kinds of filler, not all easily sandable, and I bought the wrong kind.

I believe that the Easy, in U Pol Easy, is for easy sand.

  Hi again,
If you have a "Glasplies" anywhere near you (commercial outlet that sells to the public) you can get their version which I have used and can recommend its a lot cheaper than P40 especially from Halfords.
     Good luck with the build.
         Cheers,
            Pete.
