I received a strange letter through the post today. It was from a Mr Peter J. Mahoney, in Cornwall. (I have the full address but will not give it here) My address was almost correct; Surname wrongly spelt but this is a common problem as I have a silent letter in it when pronounced, No House Number, No County and one number missing from the postcode. In it was a laminated picture of the Russian tall Ship Shtandart with a press cutting about a visit to Plymouth of a full size replica, in October 2016.
Also enclosed was a simple folded card, possibly homemade, with a picture of 'Mousehole, 1892' on the front. On the blank inside was hand written message saying 'From the crew and Andy (the dog) of the Clyde Puffer Myrtle'. Also a note saying 'Very Many Thanks, and for a charity of YOUR choice the enclosed (a £5 note) Best Wishes Captain Peter (85 y.o.)
From the address on the envelope it is obviously meant for me but I have absolutely no idea how Peter came to know of me. I have searched the internet but can find no trace of a Clyde Puffer Myrtle, or a likely Peter Mahoney.
Does anybody have any ideas, information, thoughts?
P.S. The £5 will go to the RNLI by an on-line donation.
