Well, based on the flimsiest of clues over the last few months, I was expecting a German Battlecruiser. Now, I am steering more towards a British one, a big one??

Oh come on Dave, thought it was obvious what it is! %)
It's a hull extension!!! %%

No, seriously, unbuiltnautilus was very close with his guess. It's a British battlecruiser, just not one he mentioned. There are only 13 built so it's not much guess work (well technically it's 16 but the courageous class weren't really true battlecruisers).

Well since no-one has managed to work it out yet, this is her prey/nemesis- a German armoured cruiser of some repute!
I've just managed to get this lovely hull today after waiting a while for her to be made in Germany.

See, I am now drawn to HMS Good Hope, Battle of Coronel, an Armoured Cruiser, as that looks like KM Scharnhorst. Which would point to an extended HMS Kent, sort of...but, she is no Battlecruiser. So has to be HMS Invincible or Inflexible, Battle of the Falklands, doesn't explain the hull extension though....

You've got it unbuiltnautilus
She's going to be Invincible, the reason for the extension piece is because I'm using a Dreadnought hull which is 5 inches too short to be Invincible in 1:96 scale. Dreadnought is 527 ft long and Invincible is 567 ft long so I needed a scale 40 ft section to extend the GRP hull. Ron Dean kindly made the extension piece and now I have to be brave and cut the hull in half!

I don't see you having a problem cutting your hull Nick. Lots of measuring and careful marking, you'll do fine.

Ron's a good egg, despite appearances to the contrary!!

Here is a pic of the teams old 1/72 HMS Invincible, dating back to 1986, she is now retired from an active life during the first fourteen years of the teams existence. During which we staged a pyrotechnic Battle of the Falklands at many venues, great times indeed.
Here she is at the Royal Naval Club and Royal Albert Yacht Club for their Jutland 100 Dinner, last May. Which was her last public outing before 'retirement'. I was only looking at her on Tuesday, contemplating a semi-scale HMS Collingwood on the same hull..funny old world.

Are you going to put temporary cross beams in before the cut?

I've been suggested to create two 'bulkheads' at the cut point to retain the shape and correct dimensions of the hull but I'll probably end up making four temporary bulkheads so the two hull halves and the front and aft sections of the extension piece has the same shape before committing to glue and fibreglass.

Sounds like a plan! Maybe balsa cyanoed in place, which can be ground out easily, once you start beefing up the hull joins.

Interesting, I think I would consider building a wooden trough the exact length and beam of Invincible and after cutting Dreadnoughts hull you can pull the two pieces apart keeping full alignment then fit the extended center section and fibre glass in with a good overlap. This should keep the beam constant and the exact length correct. I would probably even consider screwing through the keel before fibre glassing to keep everything in position to preclude hogging or sagging of the hull.

Please keep us posted.

Where did you get the Scharnhorst hull - looks very good and what did it cost?

Cheers
