Mick,

Have a look through the lifeboat section
Trent Refurb.....
Motors used 3548 710watts at max voltage so nearly 1hp per shaft and 900kv
http://www.kingslynnmodelshop.co.uk/p722/Overlander_Motor_-_Tornado_Thumper_V3_3548/05_900KV/product_info.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=xigen_shopping_feed&gclid=CJHakJ_BgNICFcG37Qod9I4O6A

I believe Alex even linked a video of her running at speed.
Well over scale speed but handy if you need to move in a hurry.
I think Alex used 40mm 4 blade.

i been told by a fellow club member that brushless motors are more battery efficient then brush.  i run my 1:12th speedline seven on  2x 3s lipos and goes very well,  and my speedline 1:12th tamar on 2 x 4s lpos

That's good advice to ask Model Slipway.

I'm running Overland Tornado 3548s on 9.6v in my 1:16 Trent but the props are a huge influence on performance.  So, running on brushed motors it was running well but I decided to go brushless. Just be before I put the brushless motors in, the boat hit a rock and trashed the props so bought a pair of 35mm (same size as before) but Raboesch type C props and the performance was hopeless.  As an experiment, a club member gave me a pair of 40mm sort nozzle props to try and it was like turning on a switch and the performance was right back where it should be.  Just a work of caution really; I thought the type C props look good but they were not good on the Trent!

pipster thanks for the advice regarding props  :-))
i had a 41in pilot boat with a brushless motor in and a 4 blade brass prop and the performance was good any how i hit a log on the lake and it spun the prop off.
so i fitted a 2 blade racing prop and boy what a difference the boat would almost leap out of the water.

Mick,
I've responded to your pm.
If your not fussed about looks it's maybe worth asking Simon to tap the prop through and fit a nyloc nut on the end?
That way neither of them will come off.

I have 40mm props on the Trent and 30mm on the Tamar, both with Turnigy 1250kv outrunners on 3s LiPo and 2 x 60 amp ESC, to be honest I dont notice any difference in performance with either. The reduced size on the Tamar was purely down to my own fault for not allowing enough clearance on the shaft on installation! Having 55mm on the Severn could be a different ball game! <*<

Mick what size is the turnigy??

As mentioned above 3548/05 900Kv 710 watts at max volts
At 11.1 is 9990rpm

Which is exactly the same as Alex's Trent and she shifts.
The 3548 have more than enough Torque for turning 40mm 4 blade props
whilst sending pm's to Alex he mentioned perhaps using a gearbox to reduce snatchy on/off
Which seems to be the normal with sensorless motors.
I believe the ball park figure Alex mentioned was 8000-8400 rpm remember that even with a gearbox or belt pulley system there should be an increase in Torque.

When looking at turnigy check the review on some of the motors as there is mention of magnets detaching amongst other things.
I believe there Sk3 range is worth a look
Or if your feeling flush Multiplex Roxxy motors/robbe
Or type in to google
Purplebrushless motors.

I don't think you can go wrong with overlander Tornado thumpers
They seem to get a good review and are cheap enough
At least you can speak to someone in a shop instead of hobbyking

Mick,

I'd still be inclined to go for larger motors
3542 or 3548

Your 1250kv would see you trying to turn the props at over 13875 Rpm
Bearing in mind that the props have a ideal rpm range
And I think you would be using more power than needed, probably through heat generated and lost.
If you already have the motors fair enough.
I'm sure some of the guys more informed with brushless will chim in with there thoughts.

Alex or Nick from Australia is your best bet for working out brushless.

The 1050 Kv sk3 motors seem good.
615 watts at 11.1 volt
11654 Rpm at 11.1 volt still quite high though- maybe ask Simon what the maximum rpm is on the props he supplies.
Perhaps you could use a reduction on the drive?
These are rated from 11.1 to 14.8
50Amps so should be good for using your esc's

You lose Wattage on the 1100kv
The 3548 motors listed by myself and others on your post also is less wattage at your 11.1
However the Rpm is 9990 as per Alex's Trent refurb there the same rpm as the MFA 850's
And a long run time.
I know price comes into it as well, however if it's worth doing it's worth doing right.

Hold off from making a decision and get more answers from others.

Mick,

Have you thought anymore about your motor choice?
Multiplex Roxxy 3548 motor spec supplied via eBay seller in Germany.

45-60 Amps
Up to 15 volts
600 watts up to 900 watts short term
830 Kv
5mm output shaft
I think it costs £45 each
