Brother scan n cut machine
« on: February 12, 2017, 08:52:13 pm »

Has anyone tried one of these machines to cut or score styrene sheet, from what bit of info i can find it will cut 0.5 sheet in four passes, as scoring would suffice i am wondering how deep the score would need to be in say 1.5 to 2mm sheet.

If you mean scoring so that you can then snap out the pieces, the remaining plastic (after scoring) would need to be the same for all thicknesses of sheet.

Thanks tigertiger my sister  has just bought one of these machines for craftwork, i will prepare some samples to try out and experiment using different thicknesses of  styrene, it is quite an expensive machine to buy but a lot cheaper than a laser cutter which i would love to have but cannot justify the expense for the hobby if i was doing it for a job that would be quite different.

Hi
I off to a craft fair with the dear handbrake(wife) and they are having demo's on this machine.

I would like to see if it cuts/scores wood veneer to do the deck on a project boat.

The boat has an out border in one wood including a centre plank to same, the other planking is a dark and lighter veneer.

Scan and cut/score three different veneers.
Three different decks!!!!

Hi canabus I have seen you tube vids of the machine cutting balsa and thin ply it appears to struggle a bit cutting cross grain from what I have seen but nothing a sharp craft knife wont put right.

Hi Mal
I watched the demo at the quilt fair and ask about cutting/marking/permie marking on wood/balsa??
What silly look I received ,but, I think playing around with the setting you can make it work.
I did get a setting tip sheet which will help you sister.
Also on the sheet cutting leather it notes cutting incrementally.
I missed about what file types the machine handles.

Thanks canabus  I have also found a data sheet that says it will cut 0.5 plasticard but needs popping out afterwards so it sounds like it is doing more of a deep score than a cut.
It is quite an expensive machine for just scoring styrene and maybe some vinyl graphics, if I was doing the other crafts as well I could justify the expenditure more. {:-{

I have an old Roland Vinyl cutter - similar to this machine - which I use for cutting names etc in self adhesive vinyl. I tried cutting some very thin - 0.25 mm - plasticard to make window frames. It did just about cut through, although the cut was not very clean. If you increase the pressure or knife depth, then it tends to drag and spoil the cut.
Since I tried this I have acquired a transfer sheet which may help, but I don't think it will cut more than 0.25 mm plasticard. Also trying multiple passes would be risky as it is a friction drive of the material through the machine so liable to slip between passes.
