International Model Boat Show 2017 - Warwick
« on: February 20, 2017, 10:24:27 am »

From Meridienne Exhibitions Ltd ...

THE INTERNATIONAL MODEL BOAT SHOW 2017

Visit the only 3 day marine modelling exhibition in the UK.

We are pleased to announce that the 2017 International Model Boat Show will be returning from Friday 10th –  Sunday 12th November to the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre.

The show will as usual provide visitors with a packed exhibition hall with over 600 fantastic models from over 25 club and society displays. The excellent and varied display of models from early warships to modern power boats and ships will be complemented by action on the large indoor boating pool.

This year will also see the development of the show with the introduction of a Tamiya Truckin display arena.  This will integrate a very closely linked hobby to the core model boat show, and also introduce a new selection of exhibitors and interests.

We have decided to develop the show, to continue to expand the appeal of the event, and we believe a lot of clubs and associations will welcome this diversification to grow the show in this and future years.

The Tamiya Truckin team will be demonstrating and driving their 1/14 scale radio controlled models on a roadway system over 80 metres square. This fantastic arena will feature radio controlled 1/14 scale trucks, plant and machinery. Where club exhibits have been previously limited to model boats, organisers expect to see a wider variety of models being displayed in 2017.

Over twenty specialist suppliers will also be present offering visitors everything they could need for their boat builds and other modelling needs.

Make a date in your diary now for this event Friday 10th – Sunday 12th November – tickets will be on sale in late Spring, but in the meantime see the latest news at www.modelboatshow.co.uk.

Well - It would appear that the organisers are starting to diversify the 'premier' UK model boat show (perceived..) :

This year will also see the development of the show with the introduction of a Tamiya Truckin display arena.  This will integrate a very closely linked hobby to the core model boat show, and also introduce a new selection of exhibitors and interests.

Don't know how this is going to pan out in the hall itself, but 80m2 seems a fairly large chunk of floor-space lost to model boats (9m x 9m).

The thin end of the wedge?

Hi Carl

Perhaps they've got permission to keep up the gazebo exhibition area from the Model Engineering show. I know for years that the organisers have wanted to keep it up for the boat show but the local council would only permit it for the weeks leading up to the Engineering show. If that's the case it'll be interesting to see who they have invited also to the show. :-))

I think there is a trend to diversify shows into more general modelling to keep up footfall. I gather the Alexandra Palace show, also run by Meridienne has done the same. Not necessarily a bad thing as long as boats are not being squeezed out as mentioned above.

Pity we can't get Brighton back.

I find this odd . Yes this show went through a low point several years ago. They turned that problem around and the show has gone from strength to strength .
The gaps in the trade stands are due to VERY high stand cost . Some small traders can not afford it .
To lose 80M2 + seams a lot . That works out about two club stands .  I would have thought a better idea would be to have them in a corner doing a small demo and see how the public take to it

I still reckon if Meridian let in individual modellers such as myself, instead of clubs, they would get more entries.Iam in a club, but my fellow members ard either elderly,or do not want to exhibit.
I can only attend with my models by invitation, and I exhibit purely to show them off to anyone interested.
I certainly am not interested in entering a best display stand contest, although I fel my exhibitof a model and artefacts gives me a right to do so.
If it werent for Steve Deans selected models display,I would not have been eligible to enter at all.
I must say,the staff have been very friendly and most helpful and obliging,on the 3 occasions I have attended.
Thanks

I don't think it's so much a matter of getting more models in but one of increasing the revenue which is from trader stands and paying visitors. Clearly Meridienne think that by widening the scope of the show a bit they will get more people in through the door. Whether that is true or not I don't know, we shall have to see.

I expect the club stands and the traders will be more squashed together up at the Warwick venue to accommodate the R/C trucks as Meridienne have them put on a display at the London Model Engineering Exhibition at Alexandra Palace which has a much larger floor space. I wouldn't think they would have the marque on the side of the main hall as this is more expense to hold the show, as the Midland Model Engineering Exhibition in October I think the marque on the side is half the size it used to be.
I know the Bristol Model Engineering Society changed the name of the show from Model Engineering Show - Model Show for the show they have  at Thornbury in August to try and entice other modellers to the show as well as attract youngsters as there more interested in cars and trucks than ic engines and traction engines but again this is a general model show rather than a boat/ship show like the one at the Fosse in November.

I wonder if that is wholly true?

Could it be that traders don't want to pass such a high cost on to the customer / visitor who is ultimately paying for the event anyway?
From my point of view- It's better to remain profitable and providing a good service & product than turning up to an open door?

Meridian have high prices & as much as I would like to attend I can't justify it to myself and feel it is unfair to expect my customer to accept the high price either.

Just my candid opinion.

Cant justify the high trade prices charged , i guess the organisers feel this helps to justify both trade and admission prices
However i do agree with others the organisers need to relax a little and allow individuals to come along and exhibit, who ar not members of clubs had they done this maybe more people would be attending.

So one of the last only model boat shows now goes , Blackpool went the same way last year were see who follows; ?
Only really leaves Ellesmere Port now!! oh and the small manufactures days such as Deans Marine and Mobile Marine models. which i must say are very enjoyable and worth attending  :-))

I'm speaking about the Model Engineering shows here i.e London, Warwick and Doncaster rather than just  the boat show but some guys/traders I know exhibit at these venues plus others round the country and they told me once you've payed for you plot in the hall, electric, accommodation, food and the milage you really have to know that your going to cover all your expenditures. It really is a great shame as I remember going up to London for the model exhibition over the Christmas period years ago pre internet days and guys used to have there shopping lists of requirements/items they were after as the main traders all were in attendance. Again venues like Alexandra Palace don't come cheap I think the London show in January they have 15,000 through the door but a lot of the traders who used to attend this show say 5-7 years ago don't bother now.
I think the organizers at Warwick can only be thinking about trying to entice more people through the door but they've got to be careful as not to ruin a good show putting profit first before quality.

Linkspan Models will be there at Warwick again this year.  Yes, it is expensive but we feel that to attend this show - supposedly the premier UK model boat show? - is important to us as a new company to get ourselves known and seen.

No hope of covering our costs though...........

PS - if it wasn't for the fact that we are flat-out trying to get the Norland model ready for the Dortmund show, we would also be attending Ellesmere Port and Coalville.

We have the Tamya truck guys at our show in St. Albans and it is a certain crowd drawer, the younger boys love it and they also, at our request, do a 'have-a-go' truck to drive for a donation.

The demonstration area at our show is larger than that at Alexandra Palace, so lots to see.

Expanding the remit of the show, in a controlled manner, shouldn't be a cause for concern. There is much cross over between boats/trucks/tanks in our hobby. Previously what was and wasn't allowed to be exhibited at Warwick seemed a bit draconian at times, having talked to certain exhibitors over the years. So, this, to be honest came as a bit of a shock from these organisers. Obviously learning from others!
Good luck with it all, and we will be there as usual on the Sunday.

and The Model Boat Convention.

Re Blackpool, Yes other displays are now invited but these were in a separate room and did not detract from the Boat side, More Boat Clubs/Traders do not necessarily mean more visitors, however a different subject, eg trucks and tanks will most likely increase footfall, as judging by Blackpool last year I would say it did.  8)

I know that change is necessary, & might be the difference between a show & none at all, but that does not mean that I must welcome it.

I accept that trucks might increase footfall but I have been to a lot of shows where they do their display & I have seen lots of families but not much trade support.

I wonder to what extent the extra visitors are modellers and to what extent they are "Sunday trippers". If the latter do we expect a rise in the "toy" ready to run model vendors at the expense of a modelling show?

I am increasingly coming to the conclusion that the big multi discipline catch everybody shows such as Wings & Wheels is where we are headed - hopefully with a much upgraded model boat presence.

Thank you for all your comments.

Please be assured that we have carefully planned our event space already and also how we will make sure that all current exhibitors have display space.

Below is our proposed floor plan which should reassure you that there is room for all.

The introduction of the Tamiya Truckin display arena will enhance the show without affecting the current pool arrangements or club display space. The grey blocks are club display locations.

Yup, that works :-))

There were noticeably more chairs at that end, last November, where previously there were clubs. So, obviously there had been a bit of a drop off of the smaller exhibitors.
I for one am a happy bunny, add to that a nice steak pie or fish and chips, the perfect day out..

Keep up the good work :-)
