What sealant?
« on: February 27, 2017, 08:48:46 pm »

Hi All,

I'm fitting up the steam plant for the current project, something I haven't done for years.

As far as I remember, I've used all sorts of sealant for the boiler fittings in the past, from PTFE tape, through Plumbers Mate and I've found a bottle of TRULoc 271 which I think I used.

What do the jury think is best?

 {:-{

As a minor afterthought, I've also got to solder a couple of non-functioning handles onto the funnel. Is low melting (290 degree) silver solder likely to be OK or do I need to go to the 600 degree version?

Thanks

Tony

Hi Tony,
I have used mostly PTFE tape, but have also used Plumber sealant and sometimes have had joins tight enough that copper or aluminum washers was enough. About the funnel it depends on how hot it gets, does it have a liner? I would think that that 290 degree should be OK.
Regards,
Gerald.

Copper washers (annealed) should be enough.

Thanks each,

Unfortunately copper washers won't work with the fittings as there's no back to compress against.

I've used a high temperature threadlock/sealant and tried a steam trial last night which seems to work up to normal (40psi) pressure so I'll report further whan I've re-set the safety valve to 60.

I've bitten the bullet regards the funnel and used 600 degree silver solder just in case!

Thanks

Tony,
Use Lactite 243 thread lock, it will withstand any temp and pressure that you can put on it, it's Blue in colour and comes in 10 ml bottles , used sparingly it lasts a long time, I never use anything else and have done so for the past 20 years.

Hi George,

I've used SAS 243 which I think is the same spec. as the Loctite. I think I got it years ago with a boiler/engine from John Hemmens and it seems to be rated to the same temp.

Only time will tell!

Cheers
