Motor noise/whine
« on: April 13, 2017, 11:54:28 am »

Is there anything I can do to reduce or eliminate the high pitch whine from my motor?
I would say that its common on most of my boats to a degree
I did wonder if it was anything to do with the ESC (Mtronics Viper)

Yes it is the ESC not the motor

The whine is normally caused by the motor windings resonating as the ESC switches.  One way to reduce it is to smother all the motor windings with epoxy, but it probably won't eliminate it entirely.  Some ESCs allow you to change switch frequency, which may or may not help.

Pity its the speed controller. I'm using a 25a Mtroniks which cost about £31 squid!

I  can't seem to find a reasonably priced 25a from Action Esc's?
Over £38  for just a 20a!
Which one are you using T33cno?

I'm using the 20 amp mixer unit £79

To be honest I quite liked the harmonics but I wanted the mixer control.

Ahh! Of course.
Would that one be suitable for a 43" Launch with a single but big motor (size)
Its an old Italian motor that came with the boat which have just refurbished, the name escapes me....

No unfortunately the ESC mixer is to control twin motors  but there must be a solution. I would take the time to phone AE for one to one advice  :-))

Do you actually know for a fact the current rating required?
My motors 3000rpm actually only pull around 5 amps on full load each

The motor is a complete unknown to me, I just chose 25a sc as a safe size for a heavy, large Launch such as.

I think I will phone them next week for their opinion, however its going to cost me another Esc if I change over!
This motor tho' is low rpm. thats all I can say.

If its low rpm and direct drive its unlikely you'll need anywhere near 25 amp. 10 amp probably ample but speak to the experts.

I use a clip on clamp meter to show exactly what she's pulling

2x3000rpm motors at full throttle plus control circuit drain
10.54 amps

I really like that!
You surprise me with that 10a suggestion. Nearly all my boats run on more than that but then again they
are all much higher rpm.
To be honest I've never got into realtechnical side of things but I do like that clamp on meter
and may just get one soon.

I am a motorhome owner and a test meter is an essential tool. I'm also an electrical contractor and the price of that meter that does up to 100amp DC is a steal by a long way.
Just as a test why not try a smaller fuse between your battery and ESC and see how you go

My Launch sails for first time this Sunday at my club lake.
I am running with an Action Fuse board with 20a yellow fuse I think and a 25a Esc
I could bench test with a lower rated fuse - thanks , that will be an interesting task.

Did you buy the meter online or from a uk outlet?
Varying prices on that Amazon listing.?

...Some ESCs allow you to change switch frequency, which may or may not help.
Aeronut, can you (or anyone for that matter) list the "frequency change" ESCs that fall within his spec and price bracket?

I bought from Ebay first then Amazon.
If it was in Maplins with this DC current range it would be closer to £100

Cheapest is best

Best try it in the bath and cut to the quick with a 10 amp fuse, don't try it on a pond unless there is a recovery service  :-))
A bench test is no use as it won't re create load
