Hello from Alberta Canada
« on: April 15, 2017, 05:46:15 pm »

Hi  from Alberta Canada all,

I'm a newbee! I will buy my first boat next Friday. April 21st. I live on the Prairies, far from any notable lakes or ocean. But there are some small ponds here and there. Either way, my interest in the RC  marine aspect of Hobbies just come out of nowhere. I've been a Truck crawler / trail RC guy for years and just needed to do something new.

I am down to 3 boats to decide from as my first build and
it will be an RC boat.

The  Fairmount Alpine
The Smit Nederland
The Nordkap

Opinions please.

Hi frozenrabbit471,

Welcome, really down to personal preference and complexity of model coupled with your building skills.

If you do a search on here there will be some good guides from the Mayhemers.

Good luck in which ever one you choose.

Regards,

Hi Frozen Rabbit! Welcome to mayhem. I completley agree with Rich about having a good look and read of articles on peoples builds as you will find any pitfalls and not a few useful tips for making life easier. Are your local lakes natural or man made? I assume the former. If so are there many model boaters in your area?

Hey guys,

Thanks an ocean for  the input. I think I'm better off with the Nordkap over the others. I figure I'd have a better chance at keeping interested and becoming passionate with boatcrafting by keeping it simple. I don't want a half finished "beautiful" ship such as the Rotterdam or Alpine, because the challenges were too much. That said, there is a simplicity to the Nordkap.

Ballastanksian, I live dead in the middle of the Canadian Flatlands/Prairies. Watersheds are scarce in my region. There are a few natural waterways, but very muddy water for the most part. Most of the ponds, or as the locals refer to as lakes (they're NOT lakes) were formed as natural waterways were diverted or from small dams. You would guess for farming reasons, but unfortunately, all in the name of oil. It's  easier to drill and extract oil from dry ground they say. The closest area where a bunch of guys do get to get her in natural rivers, lakes, ponds etc, is 4 hours away.

Anyway, I shall not be deterred from it. I'll build the boat and they will bring the water to me. (HAHA)

I will keep you guys updated from time to time maybe.

If you decide in the future to have a go at Fairmount Alpine give me a shout , and I am sure Mark T who also built Fairmount will be of help ,have a look at his build on here . Billings only show drawings very little text , so it can be a bit of a challenge . I have a few pictures back about 2years.
Good luck.
