Sealer or glue first?
« on: April 17, 2017, 09:16:41 am »

Hi all

My Boston Typhoon build is continuing slowly, but as a novice I would like to ask what may seem a daft question to all you experienced model builders.

Should I seal all wood surfaces before glueing parts together? I feel that the sealer would stop the glue from penetrating into the wood, but hey, what do I know.

Areas with access after assembly I would seal last, but areas with no access might be a problem.

I am about to glue the plywood sub-decks onto the deck beams. This is the area I am concerned about. I have sealed the underside of the ply deck after masking off the areas where the glue will be applied, and left the top faces of all the deck supports unsealed.

Am I being over cautious?

I have not come across this,  but my first reaction was to leave the wood undersides unsealed to allow them the breathe, and perhaps dry out when wet.

I have built the Typhoon and didn't do anything about the undersides.

Hope this helps,

If it's a ply deck there is only the face
layer left to 'breathe'.
One side of the laminate is factory glued
so sealing the outside keeps the moisture out.
Assuming you are using Marine or WBP ply.
