Lost on Scale
« on: April 20, 2017, 02:38:51 am »

Aye all,

My new model boat is the Billing Boats "Fairmount Alpine". It's 1:40 scale. Is the proper scale figurines 1:43 / "0" ?
I want to hire the right gang, and they're going to be a tight knit group. So they have to be the right scale!

Appreciate a life line guys.
Thanks :-))

Should be about as close as you can get. Check out the range from Preiser in Germany. They do some boiler suited figures in either white or orange, which should look good. Pricey, but you gets what you pays for..

Check out Shapeways (although their search engine can be infuriating)  A 1/40th scale figure should be 45mm tall and while you could get away with using 1/43rd scale they are noticeably smaller (4 mm) than 1/40th scale.
There's a guy who trades on Shapeways under the name Panzer Vs Tanks.   https://www.shapeways.com/shops/panzervstanks   He does a lot of really useful figure sets include Merchant marine crewmen.  I think it's relatively easy to rescale a figure in the computer and then you get them printed out by Shapeways.  Contact Panzer Vs Tanks and ask him about resizing, he's a pretty good guy. Some of our club members must be 1/43 scale rather than 1/40 then :}

In my experience I would not buy from him. I ordered in December and wasted two weeks before finding he had no  stock.

This vid gives a good impression of the size

If in doubt, find out how big the real vessel is and divide by the models length. Fairmount Alpine 75 metres x 18 metres beam. The model is, I believe 1 metre long...I shall leave the maths problem to greater minds than mine %)

unbuiltnautilus is absolutely right, the real boat is 75 metres long and if the model is 1 metre long it means the model is 1/75th scale not 1/40th.
The good news is that a 1/72nd scale figures would look ok on the model as the discrepancy between scales decreases as the scale get smaller; for example,  the difference in height for an average human would be 4mm between 1/40th and 1/43rd scale whereas between 1/72nd an 1/75th scale it would only be 1mm.
There are a lot of good figures out there to 1/72nd.  My favourite for modern civilian workers would be the Airfix U.S.A.A.F. Personnel set which has a lot of guys in overall in working poses.  Preiser do a railway workers set but I find Preiser figure to be expensive.
I'm willing to bet you'll find a lot of figure in this scale on Ebay.
