Ah how thing change, I to joined the RAF in 1956, for 3 years, and was paid nearly twice as much as the National Service guys, £2 2 shillings a week for me springs to mind. Never for one moment thinking I would finally retire from the RAF some 37 and a bit years later with a pension, that at that time was close to a hundred times my original pay. All relative of course, if I remember correctly in 1957 I only paid 3 shillings and 6 pence for a gallon of petrol (in modern money 18 pence for 4.54 litres) for my new Douglas Dragonfly which brand new from Pride and Sharks sorry Clark's was if my memory is right was not a great deal over £100. Ah memories, good job to still have some I suppose.
