Scale Steering at Balne Moor 14th May
« on: May 07, 2017, 05:00:38 pm »

The next event at Balne Moor will be a scale steering competition on Sunday 14th May.

There will be separate classes for large and small boats so size does not matter.  £1.50 per entry. It will be self judged so be honest!

As always there will be at least one tow on the water so you can also have a go at tug towing as long as you keep clear of the competition.

The day will start at about 10.30 and hot sandwiches as well as hot drinks will be available until about 13.00, and cakes until they're gone.

Directions to the pond are on the website, just follow the link below.

Just to whet your appetite here is a picture of my latest build going through sea trials today and in the background John Poll's tug performing a close coupled tow with the barge.

Hi Jason,

I've only a few at the moment as it was the first real sailing, (although JP took some as well).

Its based on a Damen Stan 2207, but as you can see, I got a bit carried away with the design and added features I like and left off what I did not like.

It sails well and is more manageable than my Ormesby.

Thanks for letting people know about your event this coming Sunday John.
I'm coming up to the north-east tomorrow and be going to the Doncaster Model Engineering exhibition on Saturday and be then returning home in the late afternoon/evening otherwise I would of definitely stuck my head round the door at Balne Moor on Sunday. Will you be holding an event the same weekend as the Doncaster show next year as personally this show is the best in the UK for a good all round varied selection of models.

You're wrong Jason :} .

Mine is built on a hull bought from a model shop in Holland.  The hull is sold as a Damen Stan. It is slightly shorter than the Portgarth.

The fibreglass only went to deck level so I had to get creative to finish off the hull %%

Sorry slight delay for dog walking duties :} .

Here's the link:

Its not cheap and now worse given the current exchange rate,  but I got a deal in the end as the shop made a mistake.

Almost certainly it will be the same weekend as we tend to keep the same dates for our events.

In any event I can make it the same weekend if it helps people wanting so see us as well as the Doncaster Show.  We even get visits from people making their way home from the Dortmund show :} .

There's the rub Jason.  When I ordered I got an e-mail telling me the actual postage was considerably more. I cannot remember the exact figure, but it was significantly different.  Seems the website is still wrong. {:-{

Thanks for message Butts it's a pity I didn't look up your web-site before I planned this weekend I'll definitely check for next year though BUT just to let you know I went to the Dortmund show last month and didn't get lost on-route home I couldn't afford too as I had to work to pay for the show and also get some dosh in my pocket for the Doncaster Model Engineering show this weekend.

Once again the weather was kind to us and we got a good spread of vessel types.

A sneaky wind made the steering course interesting.

John Poll got the award for largest vessel on the course, see below :-))
