1/144th Scale Figures
« on: May 19, 2017, 01:29:40 pm »

"Things that make you go oooh!"  I was looking at the Graupner ARTR HMS Belfast.  which I think is outside my pocket but looks very nice.  The scale is 1/150th and the model takes up about 1250mm of lake.  That led me on to Revell's new 1/144th scale Corvette.  Everyones familiar with the ex Matchbox 1/72nd scale kit but the new smaller incarnation is not just a scale down of the old standard.  From what I can see it's a nice little model which would grace any shelf.
Musing on those boats and scales I was looking around for suitable figures to inhabit my latest boat and came across this German figure seller.

I bought some figures to crew my new tug and it seemed to go real easy so I was well pleased.  I was also delighted to find these little fellahs
They would go well on any number of Royal navy boats and at just under 7 euros they're a bargain.

Just thought you'd find this interesting!

144th scale is also "N" gauge in the Model Railway world. There are many figures available in this scale.

Am I right in thinking that 1/144th scale figures would be approx 1/2" high?
Why so small?

1/144 scale means that 1" on the model is equal to 144 " ( 12 feet ) in reality

If typical height of a human is around 6 feet then  a representative crew figure would be 1/2" tall.

As no-one falls exactly into this six foot tall category we can often utilise scales which are very slightly different from those required as long as the proportions look the part.

Once you get into scales above 1/100th  the relative differences become less and less, the difference between 1/140th and 1/144th  become considerably less obvious than, say, between 1/35th and 1/40th.  The main problem with small figures like this is the a lot of railway figures and architectural model figure such as those coming out of China are impossibly skinny.  Human are well rounded, like the figures above, it becomes immediately obvious when they are badly proportioned.

There something adrift somewhere. either he's gone totally tonto or the there some kind of snarl up with the pricing.  The last time I looked the prices were a lot lower than that.

My guys are 1:180 - and they are extremely small, so the level of painting at 144 is amazing, though unless you have your nose right up to the model its a little pointless, 1:72 is a decent scale any thing less and the mass railway figure sources are a good idea and cost effective. They are too big for my boat so I have to build mine.
