Bristol channel pilot cutter Hilda
« on: May 21, 2017, 12:59:45 pm »

Hello I have decided to build a pilot cutter , there are plenty of hulls available but they are quite big at 1:12 and expensive.  After a brief search and some requests I had a choice of lines and plans to choose from my dad had a plan for Hilda by Malcolm Dench which is 3/8" to 1' so doubled up its 3/4"to1' giving a hull length around 37" .
I have spent some time measuring up and marking up the plan ready to cut the keel and frames. The wood has been ordered so time to think about build methods.
I have built plank on frame before my usual method is upside down on a board this time though I may try building right way up I have seen this method used more and more recently so I'll maybe try it and see what happens.

Sorry mate you have suffered from the dreaded 1 point virus %) ok2

When you copy and paste text sometimes the forum throws a wobbly and reduces it to 1pt  in size instead of 10point. If you check your post and this has happened there is a little icon at bottom right of the window (I think its there -could be top right) If you click on it the option is there to change text size back to normal. However its only there for a few minutes then you have no option but to repost any text.

I have had 2 pilot cutters both have sailed really well with internal ballast only. Rudders over scale but no extensions. Sail in all weathers by reducing sail no problems.
I only have photos of Spray sailing as I have to rely on other people to take pictures.
Hilda packed up to go in car. I tape fore sails to shrouds including lines, gaffs to boom lines to mast.  So nothing gets tangled, a pin in the bottom of mast goes in a hole pushes forward & hatch holds it in place.

Thinking of selling as opposed to sailing Hilda. The problem is my club lost its lake, the new one is to small for a large sailing boat. The only option I have at present is the river. Has to be slack high water, very restricted opportunities.   That is the reason I have built Irene, smaller & has a motor.
