Hello from Abingdon
« on: May 22, 2017, 04:35:23 pm »

Hi Everyone,
I have joined this forum in the hope I can find some information regarding building model sail boats i.e. Mayflower, Golden Hind, HMS Bounty etc. Looking at many posts it would appear that most of you are RC model enthusiasts. Unfortunately this is not the route for me at the moment. Would like to start with a small build and work up to the big stuff later.
I have looked for relevant posts but maybe I am looking in the wrong place.
Can anyone help please.
Many thanks
Dennis

There are lots of static model kits available in smaller sizes.
http://www.modelerscentral.com/
http://hobbymasters.com/model-kits-to-build/wood-model-kits/wood-ship-models/
These are not designed as RC models.

Just google 'model ships'

Hi Tigertiger,
Thanks for the reply and the links of which I have made a note.
However, I obviously did not put into words what I was seeking, which is, posts on this forum which would have builders build posts including pics if possible, so that I as a new builder could see how others build their models.
I have read smileyjon,s posts in the yachts section which is a brilliant read with pics
I am totally new to this and would also like any hints or guides as to how I should start and what tips people can pass on to a newbie.
Many thanks
Dennis

The first big job will be hull construction. If you buy a kit, this will be dictated by the kit. Some are plank onto frame, with a plywood cut out frame. A few will be frames made from composite parts.
The plank on frame methods are similar for most models, be they old time models, or modern cargo vessels. You will find examples in the master class boards.
The masts and rigging will also depend on the kit, but tackle one stage at a time. Once you have the terminology, a Google search usually throws up a lot of information including techniques.
