Electric Motor Issue - Graupner Speed 600 7.2v Nr 3323
« on: June 07, 2017, 12:46:24 pm »

I have two of these motors fitted to my Model Slipway Trent lifeboat (I didn't build myself). I've just been testing it for the first time in over 12 months and have found one engine working fine, while the other starts to turn and then stops (both directions). Both engines are connected to it's own 'blue box' as part of the wiring. I'm to model electrics what the iceberg was to the Titanic... bl**dy bad news - any suggestions on what the issue might be and how to fix? Thanks

If you can solder ..... desolder, swap over the wire between the motors, it may be the speed controller that is fault.

If the motor leads are joined to the blue box by
plugs and sockets, just swop the two motors
over.
If the good motor stops and starts it is a faulty
blue box.
If the bad motor still stops and starts, the
the motor is probably faulty.
Normally the blue box is the culprit.
Don't start waving a soldering iron around
if things are plugged together!

Graupner Speed 600 7.2v Nr 3323
Nominal voltage 7,2 V
Operating voltage range 6 ... 9,6 V
No-load rpm 11000 min 1
No-load current drain 1 A
Current drain at max. efficiency 7,5 A
Current drain when stalled 50 A

Two Elderpark MBC gents had similar setups and symptoms after a minute of sailing. I asked if either had a 7.4v Lipo battery with the same connector?
"Yes, but it is not charged" came the reply.
Right there and then, all went perfectly well with the "used" Lipo battery and their 7.2v NiMH packs couldn't cut the mustard with a 700 series motor.
One is a retired electrician so could understand the need for pulse charging NiMH batteries and the benefit of on-board voltage monitoring.

So what have you in the way of batteries?

Gould1471, if you think that last question was tricky the possible follow-up was to ask if you know if the esc just cuts out at a nominal voltage or if you need to go through an annoying pantomime routine arming sequence designed to protect a Lipo battery.

Is it safe to assume that the blue boxes are ESCs?
If they are, do they have one battery each or do they share just one?

Have you turned the duff motor by hand??? you said the boat had been laid up for 12 months, could have had water in the shaft that has gone rusty, shaft seized!!!!

Thanks to all for the responses  :-))

I can now confirm a few points....

- the blue boxes are the speed controllers ! I trolled through images on google and found them (or very similar)
- changing batteries the issue went away, so clearly the original on the motor not turning was low on charge !
- I'm using Orion NiMH 2200 7.2v which I re-charge at 2A

Thanks again everyone - happy sailing  :police:

Hopefully using a "smart" charger that will stop the charge when it "thinks" that the battery is full.  Heavy overcharging is really bad for the battery.
