Rubber to GRP
« on: October 19, 2017, 07:52:45 pm »

I need to fix a Foam Rubber Fender to a painted GRP Hull. Any suggestions on what is the best adhesive to use?

Hi,
If you are using solid rubber I use contact adhesive i.e. Evo stik, UHU etc and have never had any fendering knocked off when towing and boy do you get some knocks doing that. I suggest you try a bit and see if it affects the foam rubber. Hope this helps.
       Cheers, Pete. :-))

Hi Pete,
Is Contact Adhesive easy to clean up if any excess gets squeezed out when the Rubber is pressed onto the hull? Whatever I use, I will need to be able to clean up, without damaging the paintwork, which is my main concern.

Hi Charlie,
What I do is mask off the area I am fixing the rubber to, paint the hull remove the masking then rough up the back of the rubber and the hull before sticking the rubber in place, I find it sticks best to unpainted surfaces. If you have already painted your hull mask off approximately 1/8th of an inch in from the edge of the rubber, rough up the paint then apply the adhesive, let it dry then remove the masking and stick in the rubber. Make sure you get it in the right place first time as it really does stick. Good luck.
       Cheers, Pete

Its just a thought , there are some good double sided adhesive tapes out there . I have used one by Trend the router people . The thing you have to realise is you are sticking to the paint ,and if it has not a good key it will stick to the paint and not the hull.
