Hello from Southampton!
« on: July 05, 2017, 07:34:45 pm »

Greetings all,

I've been a railway modeller for quite some time but since starting an apprenticeship in the marine industry, model boating has appealed more and more to me. Being an engineer by trade I enjoy remaking things in miniature which is why my first model boat build is a springer style push boat. I've already got it built mainly and i'm just about to start on the rudder tube and stern tube etc.

I've really enjoyed the build so far but I'm now stumped on the electronics (I'm a mechanic not an electrician! %) ). What do I need for my boat? So far ive seen the reciever, motor, ESC, servo and batteries. Can anyone recommend a complete budget setup to fit into my springer? I mainly want to use her to push/pull an unpowered barge around so performance isn't really needed, just torque. She measures 260x100mm.

Cheers guys I hope this forum will help me along with this project,
Lloyd

For budget, you can go on Ebay and get most of your items from china. Many many members use these and get by well enough perhaps having to replace components more frequently than if buying from more reputable sources.

A good dependable source for ESCs is Mtroniks. They make waterproof components including ESC's, sound systems and mixers.

Howes Models do most of the parts inclusing batteries, servos, transmitters and receivers and battery chargers etc.

Action electronics do a good range of the same as Mtroniks. Their ESCs and mixers etc are not waterproof, but unless you plan to run your springer under a waterfall or in torrential rain, this is less of a problem. These come with cases that you have to drill holes in to let the leads through and a screw on lid. They also sell leads, connectors, servo controllers, fuse boards and other electrical components and have a page of diagrams showing different boats and the suggested wiring/component layouts. I am not a fan of electrickery but these are quite easy to follow.

You don't need a twelve channel transmitter. A four channel will give you ample coverage for most simple to mid complexity models. Once you start looking at controlling monitors (Fire fighting appliances) winches and revolving radar etc you start to need more channels. For the receiver, you can power it from it's own battery pack (usually 4.8 volts) or some ESCs have a Battery elimination circuit that you can plug your reciever into saving on an extra battery and thus cost. Look for 'BECC' or 'BEC' in the blurb on ESCs.

As for cost, things like the Transmitter can be used for numerous models, you just buy another receiver for the new model as you need it making it more cost effective over time. One word of warning though is that occasionally a company will discontinue a transmitter. Planet is and was extremely popular, offering 5 and 7 channel models with matching receivers, but then last year, they suddenly stopped making them leaving us with transmitters with use limited to the number of receivers we have. I have two RX*, and hope to be able to get another couple for future projects, otherwise I will have to buy from another brand.

Futaba and Spktrum are two well known and trusted brands offering various models of TX* and RX*.

If trying the China route, I would still get a good RX/TX package as even if you suffer multiple ESC failures the Transmitter should still be good for years.

Motors are available from loads of places, from your local car boot sale to the above vendors and Ebay etc. Model Motors Direct specialise n motors for models and small applications.

I reccomend reading some of the Springer build logs on this mega forum as you will see many ideas for set ups as well as other ideas, and you will get far more wisdom than in my gibberings:O)

*RX = Receiver
*TX = Transmitter
ESC = Electronic Speed Controller as opposed to older (but still popular systems) such as Bob's Boards.

Hi Lloyd,

The Springer is (or was) a One- Class model designed for fun and pushing competitions like water football and so on with chunky rubber bumpers fitted everywhere. They make a good rescue boat because of this.

Like the Club 500 racers they were meant to take a 540 type brushed motor with power from a standard 7.2volt NiMh buggy battery pack. Speed controllers are builders choice and Ballastanksian is right when he recommends an MTronics, very good Waterproof ESC with BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) which means you need only the one battery pack. There are loads of others out there too, so look at Howes/Hobbyking sites and so on, a 30 amp one will handle all the Springers needs plus some.

The Hull format was supposed to be standard, for competitive use and everything else, style, design, type of craft etc from the deck up was down to the individual builder so there are some really amazing nutty ones out there.

They are great little models and will easily tow a  not too heavy barge. Any good 2.4 R/C radio with two channels or more will do but most of us on here would pay that bit extra and buy a 4 to 6 channel outfit with future models in mind and further channels available. With the escape you only need to buy one servo for the Springer and there is room for a standard bomb-proof one.

A quick read of the Springers dedicated website will tell you loads more. My version is One and a half times bigger than normal, with 2x3535 brushless motors running into steerable Kort Nozzles. Bow Thrusters, 12 volt SVLA batteries for weight. An extendable Scissor action grab system is built in between decks for rescue work and the hull sheathed in Aluminium so it doubles as an Icebreaker!!....all part of the fun. (Oh it also has 4 rocket grappling hooks, 4 water cannon, on-board cameras and lazer lighting guidance system and tows a weed wacking net array!)

You are only restricted by your own imagination.

So.....enjoy...............Ron.

Thanks chaps for the responses so far, its nice to get a warm welcome! I've been looking at the "Carson Marine Radio Control 2.4ghz Package Set inc Servo, Batteries, Charger & ESC" from Cornwall model boats. Can anyone say if this is a good setup to build a model with? Or maybe this here from Howes https://howesmodels.co.uk/product/Hitec%20Lite%204%202.4GHz%204%20Channel%20Combo%20Set

Cheers chaps

Welcome to Mayhem

Keep it simple is the key

Speed controller Mtroniks
Servo from China small 9gram micro servo very cheap
Simple 2 channel radio set like FUTABA 2ER (4 channel set as you mention above is good for future models requiring more channels)
Motor wise anything 550 or 555 with low drain

Jay
Thanks for your suggestions, I'm currently looking into options as I can't lay down the deck to the hull until the motor etc is fitted inside: I've made access hatches but even they're not big enough for a complete install through them!
