My First Job Interview in over 14 years!
« on: July 23, 2017, 04:24:55 pm »

Hi guys

Tomorrow I go for my first job interview in over 14 years and what I'm in for is a bit of grilling on my knowledge and experience but for most of the day I'll have to prove myself in the physical job ensuring I'm worthy of wearing the special black overalls... but it'll be worth it because...

I'm being considered to work on these beauties!

Thanks guys

I'm in as much shock when I received the interview request earlier this week! The weird things is that I was contacted by the management not by myself so it looks like my hard work on my current squadron has been noticed. Finger crossed  ;)

I certainly am looking forward to the day, even if I don't get the job at least I've got the memory of working on the BBMF for a day!
I'll report back tomorrow evening on my experience! :-))

 I visited BBMF last year, a great bunch of guys demonstrating outstanding traditional aircraft engineering skills.  However, it seemed that lack of funding was having an impact as one of the Chipmunks had been offline for months waiting for the Gypsy Major engine to be overhauled and returned with a similar story on the Dakota's starboard engine.  No doubt you will pick up on all of that when you get to BBMF tomorrow.  Good luck with the interviews !! Well what a day!

I don't think the BBMF had seen an engineer so wanting the job as me, apart from getting there an hour early, I didn't leave until 5:30pm! I recognised some of the well played tricks to see if you're really interested in the job not just the posting to Coningsby, this was done by asking if I'd like to get on the road at 3:30pm to avoid traffic or would I like to help polish the Lancaster. Needless to say my words were muffled as I legged it back into the hangar with my cloth in hand and spent the next two hours rubbing the weekends dirt off the airframe.
I had the fantastic job of working on the PRXIX Spitfire's Griffon engine removing the reduction gear, haven't had so much fun in the job for years.
Spoke to their Warrant Officer, Chief, Trade Managers, and most of the 25 techies about their time and what it was really like. One thing that did surprise me was the question' do you like flying?' rapidly followed by 'can you swim?'. When I said I was fine with both the WO said that the previous techies and other applicants for the post in the past had said no to both! He seemed very relieved that was happy flying and could swim!
I was a bit naughty and asked about my rival to the current job and they all answered that he was ' not memorable ' which really surprised me.
So fingers crossed I'll find out if I've been successful in the next couple of months. :-))

The thing is Nick, you have a passion for your occupation and not just a need to earn a salary. Its like Living to eat as opposed to Eating to live. They get many people who are profficient but do not appreciate the opportunity whereas you have an interest in Military history and also are profficient, so they will be getting a well rounded Techie (all being well).

The salary is the icing on the cake. I think we are as excited as you are Nick  :}

With these precious aircraft they will be looking not just for technical ability but total enthusiasm for the work.  I am sure you showed both.  How could they fail to welcome you with open arms.  People with your skills, historical military knowledge, and obvious dedication must be as rare as hen's teeth.   Even more fun than building awesome model boats, AND you get paid for it.

I am SO green with envy that you got to polish a Lancaster.
No need to cross fingers.  They'd be daft not to sign you up.   :-))
