Thanks Carl :-))

My friend Ivan and I are helping each other to sort out our CV’s, he is more worried than me about it even though he puts a brave face on. We are even lift sharing to Waddington to ensure we get there ok.

Nick, write it in crayon, at least it will get noticed! Also keep it short and sweet. Prefrably write it in your own handwriting. no more han 2 sides. Only go back 10 years unless it is critical to the job. (ie relevant qualification) Get 2 good references, 1 from your current employer, 1 from outside. NO YOUTUBE REFERENCES! OR URL's

For CVs there may be a preferred format with the RAF. Maybe ask a couple of officers if that is the case.
It also helps if you CV is given with an accompanying letter, even if not asked for. The letter lets you put down in words (slow time) some of the other reasons why you should be considered. It also shows that you are a person who has gone the extra mile to make the right impression. The exception to this is if they specifically say, 'No covering letter'.

When you do a CV tailor it to the role you are applying for. Emphasize areas of expertise they will be looking for. If you are not sure, have a look at the job advert, any published job description, and anything that might have been mentioned if you have spoken to them already. For most internal jobs the interview is the decider, but the CV fills in any gaps as well as providing a richer picture of the candidate; and the CV sometimes tips the balance between two top candidates.

Nick,

I will add my best wishes for every success in the forthcoming interview and tests.  However, I suspect that you are better prepared than you might think !!

Good Luck Nick!

Tigertiger's advice on CV preparation is spot on.

Similar advice for interview prep - if there is a job description or specification this can really help. And don't be afraid to speak about your own strengths and achievements once you're in the room!

You'll do great!

Hi many years ago (25) my daughter went for a job in HR she said afterwards it might be above her capability.  I said write and tell them you enjoyed the interview and she put in a couple of extra points not covered before.
She posted the letter and 5 days later a job offer came for an assistant to the one she applied for.  They added no one had ever written to them before after an interview and they were impressed.

Always pays to do the someting extra or different assuming it is relevant.
But good luck,
kind regards

Well ummm...

I experienced what the people on Dragon’s Den or The Apprentice go through when interrogated by the Dragons or Alan Sugar.
The maths and physics exam- no problem
Interview lasted 40 minutes ranging from tell us more about yourself to have you done anything that made you unpopular.
I spoke to the other six interviewees who were being tested too and we all agreed that we don’t know if we did a good job or not- won’t get any feedback until mid November when we find out who got the jobs.
Even my Chief who applied for a job there said it was quite an unpleasant experience! :o

Thanks Bob :-))
It was completely opposite end of the spectrum compared to the BBMF interview which was enjoyable and relatively relaxing but this one was continuous questions by four SNCOs over a wide range of topics and what would I do in this situation.
I hope I get the job as it sounds fantastic once the training is complete.

Not exactly an interview more a royal command.  If I remember correctly it went a bit like this.

You are commanded this day forth to take thee hence as desired in this directive and await thine instructions.  Then proceed ye thus to yonder place where awaits you thine duties until the day that cometh of thy release from this bondage.

Ye shall strictly obey thy squire at penalty to thine self and attend ye thus to all duties that shall be desired.  Ye shall receive sustenance and lodging and small coin hence forward until thy entailment shall cease.

At all time ye shall maintain and deport thyself in manner as prescribed by thy superiors on pain of strictures as desirous by thy superiors in accordance with rules and regulations decreed by thy Monarch.

So I came to join the RAF.  Well it was a while back now, I seem to remember I had many superiors.  Small coin was £1.30 per week it is not much now and was'nt much then either.

Regards
 Roy

Hey Nick,

What happened, are you still gainfully defending the nation?

Might have to at this rate! {-)

I had ‘the’ email informing me that I was not successful at this time but they would like to thank me for allowing them to waste my time!
There was supposed to be 20 jobs which we later found out (two weeks ago) that in reality there was only 6 in my trade, three of which were given to newly promoted corporals on their own squadron. >>:-(
So I’m still looking for possible postings before they just chuck me in job they want me to do instead of something I’d enjoy. I have been to an interview at the beginning of December but I’m waiting for the results before the bad news comes again! <*<

Well I got my posting today, it was my second preference but at least it was one of my options instead of something RAF Manning wants.

I’m off to Brize Norton working on Hercules or C-130J or Fat Alberts, looks to be a pretty decent squadron with plenty of opportunities. Would have loved to got BBMF but at least the chap who did get it was in the same boat as me with regards to history so I’ll apply again when the position is announced again as the Flight is getting bigger going from 28 to 35 people over the next few years. :-))
At least I can carry on as normal.

Yeah. They used to fly a pair right over my workshop in West Sussex and down low as well! What the residents of Fontwell thought of it I don't know, but it was far cooler to see and feel than most other things :O) Good for you Nick, just watch out for the spinny sharp things in front of the engines  :}

Thanks Dave, Martin, Ian

I’m really looking forward to it, Tornado has been fun, and I’ll be at Marham for the final flight, just had the 9 Squadron Disbandment Dinner and we officially disband on March 14, 12:30pm. I start my new job on the Hercs from March 25. It means that I carry on as normal with less Shader trips than I have experienced in the last two years. :-))  Halfway there if I want BBMF, got propellers! O0
