HMS Bristol build
« on: July 27, 2017, 08:10:46 pm »

Starting a new topic as cant recall what images were in the old one that's is wiped by photo bucket.
First in the book is my version of the divers lines, these are taking from shots when built and on her last refit around 7 years ago.
Something different I thought.

Applied by spraying the hull area matt white, then using Tamiya masking tape masked off the lines, then over sprayed with Halfords Red primer and produces a nice neat finish.  Something different .I thought.

I have never even heard of them before let alone seen them on a model! When were these invented? I have heard of actual ropes being used to link parts of an underground dig to a point where divers can ascend. These were used on the Mary Rose site.

Diver lines are painted on most warships, it helps keep the Divers orientated when working under the hull
not sure when they started painting them but been a painted on warships since the Leander class (saw some pics with them in a book)
you can see them here on the Queen Elizabeth.

1. Brilliant shot of our new carrier next to one of the old ones, it shows the size increase. Is that a Harrier plonked on the ski slope?

2. The lines are very extensive. I can see the logic of having them capped well away from the propellors.

Thanks for that Gingyer and Rob  :-)) :-)) :-))

For models on display at shows, it would add some interest to an otherwise large block of colour.

Dunk them under water to see the real things and judge. Then if you are feeling charitale let them up before they drown.

Sorry, I have Hobnobs withdrawal symptoms and am not feeling charitable  %% Seriously though we do have to count to ten sometimes  %)

Such folk should be impressed that you made the effort to recreate them, not get all picky.

Ha-ha love it, best part is if you challenger them and they say "oh how do you know and you show them evidence of your knowledge, be it ID card, photos of what you have created, they soon slink away

As you say the proof is in the pudding  O0....interesting as I had never seen the same underwater hull lines used on any Australian Warship when in the Captain Cook Graving Dock at my workplace

Then again I was taken to task many times as it was said that Foreman do not actually work  :-X

I spend my entire life diving on Her Majesty's finest and I can't remember where all the search lines go! Very rarely do we get the drawings for them anyway, even though we're the ones they're painted on for!

Much easier to remember things in relation to the bilge rails, stabilisers, in line with the shafts etc etc etc.

Small World indeed. When I was a Kid, George lived four doors down the road from me in Southway, used to go down his house to play with his model trainset :-) .
Then later in life, I used to see him occasionally in Devonport where I was a Fitter/Turner for over twenty years, leaving in 2003 to head Downunder.
Say hello to him from me (Nigel), and ask if he ever finished the model of Cleopatra he was building?
