Self priming bilge pump.
« on: August 27, 2017, 05:21:59 pm »

Can anyone recommend a 12v pump that can prime it's self. I have an automatic detection and control board, but the pumps I've tried just will not self prime.

Model airplane fuel pumps will self prime.
They are gear pumps, which are good self priming pumps and reversible to remove fuel from the model.

Maybe on the Ebay..

We typically place the pump or inlet in a pocket back behind the engine where the keel starts
to rise up to the transom. The forward momentum of the boat will drive the water toward the stern.
If we are using impeller pumps, we sometimes drill a small vent hole on the top of the housing to
allow the air to escape and the water to enter the impeller housing. It usually doesn't spray water due
to the fact that most of the force is centrifugal, and forces the water to the pump outlet not the vent.

an impellor pump should self prime, I built one from a 3d print and a mini drone motor, its about 20mm diameter and 25mm long.

If all you want to do is to remove water from inside your model a simple car washer pump will do the job admerably

Tried a few of them, but they do not reliably self prime.

simply use a one way valve in the inlet pipe and then no problem and no worries

If you have the space then a yacht automatic bilge pump will do the job. Some of them are quite compact.

Deans marine do a little pump kit, used 1 on a boat for my son, so the gun on it squirts water. Think it was around £18, works well and doesn't need priming.
