I am building Earnslaw from model boat magazine. I have a small problem of building the framework for the upper deck which has to be removed to gain access to motors etc. I presently have wooden uprights but what to make the top connection with

Any chance you could put up some pictures of the situation.
There are various ways to make an 'access to the innards' and a picture is worth a thousand words.

Just ordered a Type 21 semi kit from Fleetscale and intend to build HMS Active! Hopefully looking to get t started by end of the month.

Hi I built Ogdensburg which I think is similar, I used countersunk screws to hold uprights onto upper deck and had brass rod locating into servo spares of 'rivets'.
