Sinking boat MARKER !!!!
« on: September 16, 2017, 05:00:06 am »

Hi All
We have all seen it happen a model boat sinking for some reason and not seen again in some cases!!!

So I thought of one idea for ships with funnels(no smoke generator).

A lead weight in the bottom of the funnel, a length of fishing line to a few 20mm foam balls.

It's not to recover the boat, but, to mark it's position !!!

So the pictures are the test funnel into a bucket of water to show the idea.

Good idea, and I have seen similar ideas before. It could also be done within a dummy hold and loose/floating hatch.
If the line was attached to the hull, at some strong point, it could also be used to aid recovery. You may still need to wade out, or get into a boat yourself, but you could use the line to gently lift the boat from the bottom of the lake.

Have you thought of a name for your device yet? Perhaps Lucozade.

Hi tigertiger

May be Mac Boy !!!

The boats I have seen sink would require rope with the lead and number of batteries on board.

My mate's boat is a two person lift !!!

Mate,

 :-)) :-))

These days you can get some very strong fishing line and as Tiger says attach it to a reinforced strong point.

If needed, the "bit" that floats up could be tied to a "heavier" wire/cable which you would then pull out enabling the heavy cable to take the full load.

An "A" frame rig in the recovery boat reduces the hard Yakka in lifting the boat from the bottom.

As a well known researcher into semi-submersibles my HMS Polyphemus has been known to become less than buoyant on two occasions, at Black Park, and at Wicksteed Park.

Although the technical problems have since been resolved I have incorporated such a "sub sunk buoy" into one of the after compartments.

Inside is a horizontal revolving drum with 50 meters of 50 lbf fishing line.  On the aft deck you can see the red float that unreels line should a third recurrence of "propellers in the air" ever happen again.  Our lake is deep, hence the length of line. The inside end is securely affixed to a main bulkhead.

Always useful to have a backup with a ship that when trimmed down to attack mode has its decks almost awash.

Shouldn't you have three balls to signify reaching terra firma?  %%

Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'a total balls-up'

Having lost two, very recently, it seems a great idea and one which I will incorporate very soon.  Thanks.

Loose hatches that float to the surface are difficult to see, so anything that looks like a fishing float is ideal, on some grey ships they carry paravanes and these could be utilised, whereas all others could use as suggested the smoke stack or a hatch cover that opens to allow a float to emerge  :-)

Hello,

When I was building my Schooner, Bluenose, this was a big issue in my mind - -" What if it sinks !!!!."
Solved the problem by filling all of the Hull with foam.
Made compartments for the batteries and radio gear, all of the other spaces were filled with stiff foam blocks cut to shape, and glued in.
Tested the foam and resin, found there was no reaction between the two, then the whole of the Hull was covered with Fibreglass and Resin, making a standard Fibreglass Hull.
Result - - nowhere for Water to get in !!!.  :-))

Mine does this every time it gets sunk... but it has a float in the bow also, attached with 9m of nylon chord.
Just in case the water tight box gets flooded and the ship goes to the bottom.

The hex wrenches show the projectile paths...

And the award I won for seven sinkings in a weekend...  %)

i knew a modeller who used to use a float that was secured to the hull with a  line through a polo mint,

he did tests and polo mints dissolve in water after a few hours , - the concept was if the model was to sink, the polo mint slowly dissolves over an hour or so then the line and float are released to float up to the surface.....

dont know if its works... his boat never sunk !

This was at one of the contests where you try to sink the other guy with BBs?
I fight hard enough to keep my boats on top of the water without someone trying to sink it.

Hello,

The foam used in my hull was tested with Resin which had no effect on the foam.
It was a very firm foam, a 6 inch cube block of it could be stood on with no damage to it.
Silicon Sealant - - - just been invented ! - - - was used to attach the foam to the hull.
The Hull frames were cut from card and placed into position.
The outer parts of the cards were used to maintain the hull shape when the filler/glass fibre was added.
Over the years the hull has had a few bangs and dents, filler and some paint solved any problems.
Quite a few American modellers have used this system and were pleased with it.
Quick and easy way of making a hull with resin/glass fibre.
