Struggling to find a colour
« on: September 16, 2017, 03:24:22 pm »

Hello all

I'm finishing off a Model Slipway Assurance tug and the last part I have to paint is the funnel, I have been following a members colour scheme off this build thread http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,33204.50.html but cannot for the life of me find a suitable spray can that matches the colour of the funnel. Does anybody know the member Spook or could give me a Halfords car colour that would be close as it's kind of a flat reddy brown colour.

Thanks

I have had a look at members  there is a email address for spook, not been active since  2015.
Go to members and search members.

Hi,
Looked at the pics and to me the colour looks like bog standard red primer, would darken down a little once coated with a acrylic varnish top coat. The anti fouling red is a slightly different shade and doubtless not red primer. Would suggest getting a can and giving it a go on some scrap plasticard and then see if youre satisfied with the colour match.
Matching colours is not necessarily an exact science as two people looking at a red double decker bus for example will see two different shades of red, even as an individual you can verify this but looking at a colour picture with alternate eyes covered up, you will notice colour variance between your left and right eye and vice versa. Even looking at colour photos of boats and more so older ones will show variances in colour, depending on the film used, the light conditions, the age of the photo and even when a photo has been digitally reproduced can have an affect on the colour representation. At the end of the day it is what pleases your eye and what you are satisfied with. You will always get the one person that says such and such colour isn't right and there is one too many rivets in such and such plating etc. If youre happy then that is all that matters!

Hope this helps
Dave

Just out of interest, what was the colour used?
Glad you achieved a result.

Knew that was coming {-)

I'm still thinking red primer........spook has used the same colour for the decks and funnel but different on the anti foul.

Only 'Spook' knows the answer! :-)

Now I'm wondering just what spooked him so badly he had to leave (or just not log on to) the forum  {-) :((

Think I'll go for brick red for certain  O0 ..not sure about red primer just doesn't seem right to use that... not arguing.. just my opinion :-))

I understand he is talking about car spray cans...but I can't think of any that colour, you could be right about red primer...time for a lie down I reckon :-X

May be he will log on again at the end of October!

He might be watching us as a 'guest' or as a 'ghost'............I somehow hope it is the former and not the latter! :o

Think youre right about the red primer, wouldn't seem right to use it as a top coat.............but who knows?!!

Hey who's that new guy with a lifeboat and a garage that looks like the recycling center at saltcotes near Lytham, not far from Fleetwood.. ;) {-)

I believe you might be referring to my mate neil.

you might also find him under his earlier name until the great mayhem crash some years ago so I am told....   nhp651

out of that "recycling centre" come some magnificent models, if you look on the lifeboat section and the masterclass section......he's just been away for a couple of years, and all his history has apparently been lost.......but certainly not new around models.

i'll tell him you were asking about him {-) :embarrassed:

Yes Jim !

I've only met Neil once but I know about his building and moulding skills, a top guy  O0

Doubt he will remember me...maybe he will be at the Blackpool show? I'll do my best to be there both days this year, missed out since 2014 if I remember right, my memory is shot now :-X

Are you going?
I'll probably stand out like a sore thumb :embarrassed: {-)

ahh, didn't know you knew him, John. :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

I think he is taking his new ferry and his two old lifeboats to Blackpool and said he'd be there at some stage both days...............you can't miss him.........the overgrown Santa, lol. I believe he'll be taking some mouldings for the new lifeboat he's building too, before handing it over to Baloo, I think.

don't think I'll be going.........always makes me so envious looking at all the beautiful models knowing I'll never achieve anything like it.

Sorry for the late reply

From memory the colour he said it was is Humbrol Satin 133 which is listed as Brown so giving it a go but the funnel seems to have more of a red tone to it from the picture.
