Winter Preparations?
« on: September 26, 2017, 12:15:54 pm »

Yep I'm bored...you get cabin fever when you are stuck indoors 24/7.

I'm thinking about October 29th...DST...the end! lights go out, well, they do here in our village often %)
 I've got new batteries for my torch, candles - matches - etc  etc...thermals ready, stocking up on food that keeps for a while, you get the Idea.

What do you do to prepare/nothing just hope for the best it will be good weather...maybe you live in spain...or Banff? ...or MacDuff.

I would be interested in your preparations, especially if they are unusual :-))

Jaguar Drivers... do you mothball your pride and joy? O0 ok2

JB.

Just had six ginger nuts and three digestives with my Kenco...

Bought a Model Slipway Our Lass II. So when the wind gets up to gale force, I still have a boat to play with!

Canabus has the best comment.  Not very practical for us Northern Hemisphere types, but a lovely thought nevertheless.  Enjoy your summer chaps !

We don't close shop in the winter, unless it rains, snows, or the lake is completely frozen over (rare).
Boats & batteries need exercise too  {-)

A model icebreaker should handle 5mm of ice perhaps?  Here the profusion of swans geese and ducks usually keep a reasonable patch of seaway ice free.

Yes it is the season to avoid, I am off to Oz again to avoid February and half of March.  I shall be expecting to see the 'out like a lamb' bit of March when I return.  God willing of course.  Interesting to see the 'Secrets of long haul flight' TV programme recently as this is the flight I travel on.

Carrying on regardless then going to work in the same airfield that I end at every six months in the Med! Then returning some time in March 2018.

Hi JB,  All the best with your tests. We do like your blogs so keep your phone charged up   :-))

My father was Jag man all through my youth-ness and I borrowed the mark 5 once to take my girlfriend out for the evening with other friends in the back.

The new M4 had just opened by Bristol and off we went for a silly drive.  How fast will she go, was general question  ( the car, not the future wife !) so I tried the foot to the floor test.  It was terrifying, as my future wife had an eye on the speedo and another was watching the rev counter  (proper test flight stuff with details being screamed out aloud).

We reached 119 miles per hour when the corner came up at the end of the motorway where it ran into an ordinary dual carriageway with restrictions..  The most terrifying moment of my whole life as we slowed as quick as we dare to get back to normal speed.

I vowed never to go as fast again especially when I proudly told Dad, where he informed me the car was on remoulded tyres and what on earth had possessed me.

Cheers

Pretty soon time to put winter tires on the car so we can make it to Banff :), have to dig out the snow brushes and ice scrapers.
Make sure the engine block heater is okay and ready to be plugged in when it hits -20C, just put RV antifreeze in the motorhome. Our power is pretty dependable but we have a small generator that could be used for backup.

I don't do anything in particular. It's not like we live in Sweden, especially here in the sunny South West. I'll take the car out as little as possible due to the salt on the roads but otherwise same as usual, although the water gets a little colder for diving!

With regards to the ol' top speed test... I did it once in the Volvo. I knew it was going to be serious speeds, so I did several recce runs of the section of motorway beforehand, as well as a tyre+nut/bolt check. In the wee quiet hours one morning, I buried the throttle.... And not long after went off the speedometer. All I know is that she'll do more than 160mph, I don't see any need to know what exact number she hit, nor do I have any inclination to try again and find out.

Really.? In a Volvo...160 have I read that right...All the roads around here are  a maximum 50mph except for the M55 of course, my XJ6 has a top speed of 145 or so I understand, there is no chance I'll be flooring the throttle! Too old for any of that...or anything else which involves any risk or even a suggestion  {-)

Go on then...which Volvo goes over 160mph... 8)
Jb.
ps. Up early again...hospitals are not the ideal places for a good nights rest, Enjoyed my Horliks at 9pm..settled down...10 minutes later a new admission to the ward, it finally quietened down about 2pm until an hour later!!! I gave up trying and been on the net since.
Another night without a proper sleep..must be 7 weeks now... <:(

JB its not any better in our village in Spain - I could say its marginally worse! We get power cuts in the summer for no apparent reason, with no way of knowing when its going to come back on!

In the summer they tend to cut power when there are wildfires in the countryside, they turn off the grid so they can use aircraft to drop water on the fields, hills, mountains, so you never know when the power will return. In winter the power goes off and can be off for 10 hours or more,  due to the drain on the grid from the cities, apparently its more important to keep the cities lit then it is the little villages! The reason why most houses in the countryside stick with log burners instead of going upmarket with central heating of some sort. Our weather here is every bit as cold as good old blighty, in fact we had 2 feet of snow last year which is more than the UK got, funny how the government doesn't pay the winter fuel allowance because we live in a warm climate %% These are from january this year.

I have a C30 T5, but it's not standard. She only has 316bhp, but she puts out 384lbft of torque! Not bad for a little hatchback.

Thanks  :-))  Scaring to death duties are usually performed in my MX-5 track car, which I've been hammering around Castle Combe all day today!

The Volvo just makes a nice comfy daily, mostly.

I'm on my phone here, so I can't rescale images down to the size Mayhem likes, so you'll have to excuse the links!

Here's the Volvo;

And the Mazda;

And here's a lap from Combe yesterday in the Mazda;

This was a just a track day, non competitive, but they do have their Autumn Classic on next weekend, a mini Goodwood Revival kind of affair.
