Motor stutters and stops on startup
« on: September 28, 2017, 04:32:30 pm »

Have had this air boat out about 6 times since I got it a few weeks back with no probs yesterday   I put a meter on it for some info on amps etc., and no problem .This morning down the lake  it stuttered and stopped each time I started it and a couple of times actually reversed. I believe it is a good motor in it https://www.aircraft-japan.com/en/datasheet/hp/z30/z30all.htm . as it is difficult (for me) to check all the connections  which would be the best to go for first.
Thanks

Hi jay, is your battery fully charged? What radio system are you using, does it need re- binding.
Is your throttle stick full off before switching on?

John
If it needed re-binding, nothing would happen.  Either there is communication, or there isn't.
No/faint beeps.  The beeps need power to happen.  Faint ones could be a lack of proper power.  Power is not just the battery, but also the wire and connectors that get the power to where it goes.
Traditionally, check the ground (-ve), usually the black wire, first.  If it was car wiring, that's equal to looking for a "bad earth", cause of many mysteries.
Or, if the transmitter is programmable or has function switches, make sure it thinks it is running the right model and/or no unexpected switches are operated.

Thanks Malcolm Yes I will be going down the road of checking with  other RC gear first before I  try and get at the connections
It just seems strange that it only happened after after I  used the meter

Hi Jay, could be that when you removed the plugs for the meter, you have not pushed the plugs back together properly or one of the wires has broken inside the insulation. Just run a continuity check with a multi meter and wiggle the wires as you do it, might just be a duff connector

Hi Mark the meter just plugs inline into the Batt to esc circuit alas the  Esc  to  motor  section is extremely well shrink wrapped.Just looking for any other possibility before dissecting that

rebind it, thats the first thing you should do, its also the easiest. it sounds as if the ESC is not receiving anything from the receiver. disconnect all the receiver and battery wires plus the motor ones and start from scratch.

Just wondering what the symptoms would be if one phase of the motor was disconnected or high resistance.  It certainly wouldn't rotate, and it might well reduce the volume of the chirrups.

As one of my mentors said when I was a youth in training, "Get as technical as you like, but look for broken wires first"

I have to agree that this has all the hallmarks of a poor or broken connection. It's been said that 95% of radio control issues come down to bad batteries and broken wires. Also quite often to forgetting the protocol of switching the tx on first and off last.

To eliminate the radio, completely, try a Servo Tester staright into the ESC.
eg. https://tinyurl.com/y73hgflx

Have you got another Brushless ESC?
Have you got another Brushless Motor?

Thanks to everyone for their input Yup dodgy motor connection. On separating the 3 feeds one  I managed (?) to part the wire from the connector  on. Soldering being something I abhor ( useless at it) I did manage to get the wire back on to my surprise.
On connecting all up I then noticed this particular connector was a wee bit of a slack fit  so maybe I NO breakee wire  after all :}
Any road fired up all the correct noises and  running sweetly Yippee. Thanks again to all
