Birthday prezzies
« on: October 21, 2017, 08:51:36 pm »

Hi all well my birthday is not till Thursday and I thought I had got lucky when my missus bought me the pocher 1/4 ducati plus the update kit, well I had my kids over this weekend for my birthday party and they bought me these

How lucky am I.
After a little research I discovered these and the warspite were all there when the Bismarck was sunk, obviously you all know I built the warspite in a dio, I'm now toying with the idea of doing a dio with these 3 in it.

Happy birthday kp, well in anticipation! :-))

They're fantastic model kits and build superbly but are you sure about the Warspite being at the sinking of the Bismarck? I'm sure she was busy in the Mediterranean with the battle of Cambrai and Matapan around this time. One of her sisters may have been on convoy duty but certainly not the Warspite as she was too busy making a reputation with the Italians.
I'm sure you'll do a fantastic build of them and I'll look forward to your sea scapes- I'm still in awe of your lifeboat build. :-)

Thanks guys.
Well that's Google for you. I typed in did warspite and Bismarck ever engage and it said that warspite with 9 other cruisers and destroyers were there at her sinking.
Anyway at 1/350  it would still have had to be an enormous dio probably 50 yds square not really practical.

Again from Wiki

During the German invasion of Crete Warspite was used as a floating anti-aircraft battery and,[72] like many other ships, suffered severe damage from German air attacks on 22 May.[73] A 500 lb bomb damaged her starboard 4-inch and 6-inch batteries,[74] ripped open the ship's side and killed 38 men.[75] The attack was carried out by the Luftwaffe unit Jagdgeschwader 77 (JG 77—Fighter Wing 77). Oberleutnant Kurt Ubben, a future flying ace with 110 enemy aircraft shot down, claimed a hit on the warship.[76] She was able to make it back to port under her own steam, but the damage could not be repaired in Alexandria and it was decided that she would have to be sent to Bremerton on the west coast of the United States.[77]

Repair and refit[edit]

In June 1941, Warspite departed Alexandria for the Bremerton Naval Shipyard in the United States,

so she was in the med during the bismark episode

Well I won't question someone with the handle warspite and we all know some Google searches can be very questionable to st the least and it was just one search had I got serious on it I would probably spent a bit more time on research.
Thanks for the info though all very interesting.

Just shows how unreliable the internet can be - people can post anything they like and often do - and other people believe it. It can be very handy for confirming something you already know but all 'facts' should be cross checked.

AAAHH - but don't be fooled by my handle, I adore the ship and have always done so since I got the Anatomy book - which is in the loft and as yet I have not cross referenced, the info is available on wiki as a quick reference and needs several others to confirm from other sources that the information on wiki is correct.

The Bismark must be a rerelease of an older kit as there is a battery box moulded in the bottom of the hull and 2 propshafts with propellers but no mention of any of this in the instructions.
I imagine this was like the Airfix 1/12 Bentley 4.5 supercharged which was originally sold to be motorised but they have removed it on the new release but you can still see the remnants of it in the kit.

Incidentally the props looks really good quality.

Indeed, some of Tamiyas kits are of great vintage, and are periodically re released much to the joy of many. Probably twenty years ago, I bought one of their kits of the early T34 from Howes in kidlington and it still had the gearbox and other bits in. I don't know where they went.
