Before the days of RC...

...we had control line. Some still race with control line models today. Quite entertaining to watch. You get the impression that with one false move you could risk decapitation.

As a lad, I remember my Dad setting up a control line trainer for the first time and away it went with pride. Unfortunately he had over furled it and 15 minutes later he was dizzy from spinning on the spot. Ending up on his knees, the inevitable happened in a big crash of balsa wood and metal.....Happy days..

Happy memories. an ed racer in a keil kraft stunt model, chasing each others streamers. sweeping up at the end of the day and re-building with copious balsa glue, dope and tissue. Oh yes, no seemed to mind the noise.

I can remember the days when the RAF had a display featuring a compressed air powered Hunter taking off, circling on its air lines and then landing. Saw it a couple of times at model exhibitions  :-))
Not sure what years though.

As a young teenager, we had a shop between two local towns which sold second hand items, for several months there was a german stuka in the window, again of this type, good job I didn't earn enough in a paper round to buy it, it would have been disastorous.

Now its hard enough to find a pond that has no weed in it and you can sail from one side to the other un interrupted, hence why the current project is stalled as well as the shifts I am on.

Yep I remember those days, there used to be a control line flying club in a Fareham school, I must have been around 15 at the time and went to one of their shows where four boys were doing the streamer chase all went well till one of them tripped over another's feet with hilarious results. ;) ,  but there was another lad doing acrobats with a flying wing and he was amazing.

Used to do the quieter - and safer? - version of this............  Indoor Round The Pole flying.

It was at my ATC unit when I was a teenager and the aircraft were controlled by Scalextric type hand controllers.  I particularly remember a Britten Norman Islander that I built.  There used to be a shop somewhere around the London area that specialised in this form of flying.

Before (I could afford) RC I used to fit a random drive to alter the rudder.  It was a slow drive cam operating the tiller and ithe boat would twist and turn much to the surprise of on-lookers.  It was as well to be on a pond with all round access.

All this talk of powered and control line flying reminds me of my kite flying days. I worked near a local park and at lunch time used to fly a 6 ft span home made delta kite. One brilliant summer day I was happily flying when two gentlemen walked over to me. "Excuse me sir, that kite of yours is going well. Would you mind flying it a bit lower. Pilots going into N......T don't like being looked down on!" Ah, happy days!

roycv, Did you get the design from FJ Camm's 'Model Boat Building' book sixth edition (1948) Chapter XV? I made one in the 50's for my Mamod powered 3 planker.

Hi Grumpy Dave, In this thread the boat with cam operated rudder was a Carribean Coaster.  Not sure what your reference is but is it connected to the Streamlinia thread?

Many a happy Sunday morning spent flying combat (streamers) on Wanstead flats.

You could build a Dominator flying wing in about a week. Powered by a 2.5cc PAW diesel. :-))

roycv, Coincidence, I was looking at the Streamlina article in the book and I saw the clockwork steering . The picture looked like it could have been on a Streamlina. My boat was a very  simple shape.

Hi Grumpy, there is me re-inventing the wheel!  Never seen anyone else do it.  Come to think of it are you sure it was not early radio with a clockwork actuator for the rudder?  I have just such a one in my collection.

roycv. pictures enclosed Hopefully 2 . Showing clockwork steering also boat with it fitted. A bit like the one I built. The bit on the previous page 140 is part of a write up on a 15cc step hydroplane that should do 25MPH!

Hi Dave, not seen that before,  My one was actually electric, it was a gearbox reduction about 2 rpm driven by an Ever Ready Tornado electric motor with a cam arrangement similar to Streamlinia pictures.  My one is long gone and was done when I was a teenager those days are long gone as well!

Not quite before, but maybe at the start of RC.....

11 or so relays, possible photo-detector cell at the bow, steering system, motor speed control...all the basics

Nice looking boat!  That could be a telephone type selector unit in the bow.  Very popular once, back in the 50s.
I think I would be tempted to re-do the insides take photos as you do it, but that system will never really work again.
thanks for sharing,
