« on: November 01, 2017, 03:16:10 pm »

One of our Committee members and his wife are moving to Paignton, Devon in the near future and he is keen to find an active Club to join in the region. Any recommendations and contact info?
Many thanks.

Hi, I used to live in Paignton (Roselands)...........I think you'll find that Torbay and district model boat club are the closest, they sail on Youngs lake, Goodrington (where the big white plastic swans are!)
Google the club they are there somewhere.

hope this helps, Dave

I thought Torbay had finished, but I will stand corrected.  Failing them, you have Plymouth as has been stated earlier.

I use to be a member of the Torbay club. We left in 2011 and ended up in Somerset. Still have a good mate down there who now belongs to Exeter Club who use Canonteign falls, near Chudleigh. Youngs Park became hazardous to boats with the local swans as they attacked boats, literally saw them destroy a Robbe PT boat, shame. So your choice, Plymouth or Exeter.

What boats(s) are you planning on using as I believe Canonteign are suited more to power than sail? because of the sheltering trees?  Never been there so don't know if this is true!
Paignton has a small pond in Victoria Park, not particularly deep and you will get grief from the Duck Police, but may do as a standby now and then.

It is a shame boat clubs are very sparse down here I thought there would be a very active model boat community down but not much seems to go on.
Cannonteign isn't a great venue quite weedy little or no use for sailing and only available Easter to the end of the summer. The boating lake at goodrington would be perfect it's a shame about the swans.

There is Millbrook near Torpoint or Looe,  a bit further down but good for all.

Millbrook is about an hour from me so could be a possibility.

If Millbrook is a possibility then Plymouth is nearer - and larger!

DARTMOOR MODEL BOAT CLUBShaugh Lake (Sibelco)We are probably the premier model boat sailing club in the Devon Cornwall area.
The IOM, Six Metre plus the Dragonforce 650 and Dragonflite 950 class r/c yachts are our main fleets.
We have a power boat section that has Petrol and fast electric craft as its main interest. Scale boats too.
Sailing days are Wednesdays and Saturdays, Power boats on Sundays.
Both sections have evening activities in the summer.
As a Club, we do encourage visitors and potential new members to visit us as we can give you tuition in R/C craft.

Scrumps was 10d for rough, A shilling for smooth, but we used to drink mixed at 11d.
Can't remember the price of Ivor Dewdneys oggies.
Oggie Spesh had a sausage stuck in it and a Chief and Po was a steak pie with gravy. Grand days, no Elfins or Elfoods.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I`m going down to Paignton next week for a holiday and was going to take a couple of my budget speed boats. Did you ever find somewhere in Paignton ?

Originally I saw Goodrington Boating Lake but not sure whether its still suitable. I saw the post about the boating club having left their 2011. Also thought about trying one of the boats in the sea as I've seen a youtube video of someone doing it with a UDI01 Venom which is one I have. Also got a plastic hull Frigate I've been restoring that I am yet to sail but thats not coming with me.

I usually go near Lemonroyd Marina on the Aire and Calderdale Navigation Canal near Oulton (Wakefied/Leeds) as there is a wide bit next to where the old fuel depot is which is excellent for boating and doesnt disturb the fisherman.

Also off topic I noticed on google maps what looks like a little RC dirt track for cars someone has done near the Octopus just outside the park which is intriguing as I was going to take one of my RC off road cars but then again thinking about it might be too fast for the little track as it can do 40mph its an insane thing.
