Gluing ABS
« on: November 20, 2017, 08:16:12 pm »

I have seen an ABS hull that is begging to be completed, but I do not have the know how to even start the process of joining the Hull and preformed Upper works, as I have been told that none of my regular glues will work.

Anyone got any suggestions please?

My first reaction was to say Epoxy, but on reflection there might be more to it than suggested.

I would recommend viewing our  'Gluing section' as all sorts of glue is mentioned for the different surfaces.    :-))

Epoxy doesn't stick that well to ABS. The best glue I have found is UHU Acrylit, not cheap but does a really good job

I use acetone for abs, I also use it to form a slurry that is spread very thinly on the glass bed of my printer to help the parts stick. you can buy small bottles at most chemists, or by the liter online. for joining parts just spread a thin coat on each part with a brush , then press together. acetone is also used to smooth abs parts from the printer, parts are put into an enclosed space with acetone fumes, for as long as it takes to slightly melt the surface, then removed and allowed to set again.
note test on an inconspicuous area or piece of scrap first

I use this product for small joints  https://www.deluxematerials.co.uk/en/rc-modelling/116-plastic-magic-5060243901545.html

It can also be mixed with cut off's of the material that you will glue and then used as a thick glue. the same can be done with acetone but it is more smelly.

Hi,
here in Oz I had a lot of trouble finding a proper glue.

Then I got hold of a guy from IPS Corporation and he just said Number 16 is what you want.

he stated that it would glue any plastic to plastic providing it was left overnight to cure

I cannot fault the glue at all. It is similar to the Airfix tube of glue but it has a stronger smell.

Do not use it indoors or the other residents will complain.

I must say that looks a superb product used with the pinflow applicator. :-))

Fusion is probably overkill but great when dissimilar materials

Yes I'm sorry to say. Means they may be easier to glue up (if I find out how) but the down side is they are quite fragile.

For gluing ABS especially to itself go to your nearest plumbers merchant and buy the glue for ABS pipe joints.

Try StixAll (300ml or so cartridge) for about £5-50 from ToolStation - available in clear, white and black. Similar product also available from Wickes.

Sticks almost anything to everything.

StixAll  & StickslikeSh*T are good and very powerful but difficult to manage in small joints

After all the help here it seems almost churlish to say I cant use it. I have belatedly realised that if I permanently glue the upper works to the hull there isnt a way into the thing, so it seems I will have to bolt them together through a rubber gasket or somesuch if I want to have any sort of maintenance access.

Sorry, but thanks the efforts folks.

It's similar in shape to an Anatec Bait boat.

I fear that "Her Indoors" would have my guts for garters if I stank up her home, so thanks for the warning.
