Airfix 1:72 Severn Class Lifeboat R/C conversion
« on: November 22, 2017, 04:26:17 pm »

I've not yet finished, but I already have some pictures:

Prepared for the 6mm engine of the bowthruster.
Some lights already connected.
First floating in the bathroom.

It's really hard to keep the 110 grams limit.

It’s amazing how small Rc equipment has become over the last few years. Great job so far :-))

Yes, it's really amazing.
One friend of me did the 3D drawing.
Another friend did the 3D printing.
Now we have 3 amphi trucks of about 24 grams weight each one.  This was only possible with modern 2,4 GHz equipement.

Harry,  if you are wanting to save weight did you look at the Deltang range of combined Rx and ESC boards?  I have had good results with other plastic kit conversions through some bought here:

http://www.micronradiocontrol.co.uk/rx_dt.html

I'm impressed with your amphibious truck and was thinking of motorizing the 1/35th Italeri DUKW with power and steering on the front wheels.  Can you show more on how you do the same on your truck, especially the universal joint please?

Thany you Francis  :-))

In Germany I have a retailer who also sells such little devices: https://www.sol-expert-group.de/1zu87modellbau:::48.html?XTCsid=0e112701b23b9900e8629c9226d3d57d

But the engines of the lifeboat will need too much current, that's the reason why I'm using my own device. A lifeboat is a fast boat, and I want the model to be it, too. May be I will change my 6 channel spectrum receiver, but I'm not yet sure.

My amphibious truck doesn't need a universal joint because of the body consists of two movable parts. That's the steering.

The DUKW needs a driven and steerable front axle, indeed. Without it the vehicle cannot leave the water. I built a  four wheel driven Truck in 2001 or so, there are some pictures: http://www.mikromodell.eu/man4x4x4.html

Thanks Harry and do you have more pictures of the chassis, drive and steering arrangements?  It looks very well engineered

On the power needed to get the Severn to a realistic speed (about 5 ft per second) what propellors are you using?  I have used a single Deans Marine 18mm diameter 3 blade plastic one very successfully (over 6 ft per second) in the Airfix Vosper MTB driven by one of the Parkzone geared motors (weighing about 4g) Micron offer on their website and I doubt the motor is even taking 0.4A on a 3.7V LiPo.  Twin props for the Severn would need to be considerably smaller to fit and therefore load the motors much less.  There is also the option of amplifier boards to boost maximum current to 3A if really needed:

My props are additional parts for scale 1:350 battleships offered by Trumpeter some years ago. I didn't need the gun barrels in this set, but the props work very fine.

My preferred drive for small and powerfull drives has is a coreless motor of 7mm diameter: https://www.sol-expert-group.de/1zu87modellbau/Motor-und-Getriebe/Motoren/Mikromotor-M700-Durchmesser-7-mm::328.html

I don't have more pictures of my truck, but in Germany we have a special forum for such kind of models. I assume some of them are able to read and write english language. Just register and ask your question: http://78514.homepagemodules.de/f2-Vorstellungen-der-Mitglieder.html May be there are some etched parts for driven steering axles available. I know, anyone had some such parts.

Thank you for the link, I marked it. In summary these devices mean 10 grams less weight...

Thanks for the forum link Harry and I'll follow that up

If I understand the word Anschlusswiderstand correctly from the M700 data sheet, the stall current for the motor is going to be well under 1A on 3.7V so the 0.8A power board should be fine.  It will be interesting to hear what performance you get from that motor and prop combination as I have always used the Deans props with a steeper pitch but driven via a 5:1 gearbox.

What a beautiful little model! Very nice work.

Are there any videos of her? Would be lovely to see her sailing around in that scale environment?

That's looking very good Harry

I bet you needed to take quite a few pictures to get one in focus and in the centre of the shot when you have such a small and fast model.

Did you use the RC setup you showed in your first post and do you have any estimate of what current the motors are drawing?

We are still working on the high speed pictures...
Yes, the RC setup is still the same. Current at maximum speed I think about 1 or 1.5 Ampere. I didn't have any chance to measure until now.

Is that on a 3.7V LiPo as power supply?

Thank you :-) Yes, it is the perfect environment for such little models. We love to cruise there and we do it three times a year.
