Hi everyone,
Its 5 years in May since we have done the Big Thames Cruise.
Its time for a new model and a new cruise or cruises.
We are going to put the full build, setup and testing on this thread.
Any shows we are attending we will let you know and of course loads of photos.
It will be posted on here and also on Mayhem Facebook page.
We have a number of venues where the cruise may take place and we will let you know where it is in due course.

Been looking at brushless motors and gearing for the new model to day.
Going for Turnigy D3548/4 1100kv brushless outrunner motors with a 2.1:1 belt drive reduction.
Also thinking of running her just on lipos as I have 10x11.3volt 3s 5000mAh so if I buy 10 more that will give me 100Ah of power for under 10kg.
So you should get around 40 to 60 mile on all 20 batteries and I can charge 4 lipos in 30 minutes, so 2 hours 30 minutes model recharge.

Hi everyone, The model ship is a 1:72 Fleetscale Type 45.
We decided to use this model because its a model that anyone can buy.
On the Big Thames Cruise it was a bespoke model.
So this time we decided to show everyone that a production model can achieve just as much.
We are hoping that after we have built and completed one or two challenges it may inspire other modellers to try
a similar path.
Today the brushless motors and belt reduction kits arrived. The motors look tiny being only 35mm in width and 48mm in length.
They do have a 910w output and that's without the belt drive reduction.
Then the motors in the 1:32 scale type 45 were only 50mm x 50mm.
At least with this you are not going to need a trailer, should be able to get it inside a fair sized estate car if not on the roof rack.
Hopefully I should have the model in the next week or two and then we can start getting down to some serious work.

Watching from afar Alan  %).......looking forward to read the build thread...[I hope that electronics pyramid is lightweight]

That 910w motor output essentially remains the same however the torque is increased by the step-down ratio...... :-))

I have just weighed a motor and the belt drive reduction.
It come's out at just 425g a side so not to bad ,ESC'S 72g.
I would think this model will be around 75kg to get it down to the water line.
Working on the 1:32 type45 was 390kg down to the water line.
A 1:72 type 45 should be just under 1/4 of the weight.

I think this is going to be a bigger engineering challenge than the big 1/32 scale model. There seemed to be some choppy moments on the last cruise. Although a 1/72 scale Type 45 is a big beast ( weathered one for someone about three years ago, just about fit in the workshop, had to go outside to turn it round to paint the other side! ), waterproofing and stability will be more of an issue than with the bigger boat.
Looking forward to your approach to the above, pretty confident you know your onions?!

The Model arrived this Tuesday a week late, not bad considering the bad weather.
I will open the big box on Sunday as I am working until Sunday morning.
Photo's on Sunday.
Time to start building.

Got a bit done today, built up the belt reduction units and fitted the motors.
I have had to modify them to take the brushless motors.
Next job is to fit the props and rudders into the hull.

Measured and marked up the hull ready to fit the prop shafts and rudders. Checking the plans the rudders are offset by 13 degrees. Hoping to get the running gear in later today.

Got the prop shafts and rudders fitted. Put oilers tubs onto outer prop tubes and made the trim tab. All filling done and rubbed down.
